Ilu tmien xhur ma jidher, tmien xhur sħaħ.
Waqa’ l-lejl fuq il-lejl, il-baħar siket,
tibki l-gżejra fid-dlam, tibki fil-baħħ.

It hasn’t appeared for eight whole months.
The night fell upon the night, the sea came to a stop,
the island wails in the dark, wails in the void.

Where oh where did our moon escape to?
The heartbroken whale snatched it away.
She swallowed it to hide in the blackness,
for the waves to go silent with her soul.
