The worst peace-time natural disaster in British history, devastated the East Coast of England, particularly Essex. More than 300 people died, more than a third of those in Essex. The floods also devastated the low-lying Netherlands and Belgium with the loss of many hundreds more lives.

21 year-old policeman Don Harmer won a commendation for bravery from the Queen for crawling for more than 12 hours in the dark from Jaywick to Clacton to get help. Interviewed by Ray Clark in 1992.

At Great Wakering, Essex a temporary housing estate of Nissen huts was underwater. Sammy Sampson heroically got a boat and recovered about 30 people, but some weren't alive. Interviewed in 1992.
