Buffalo, New York: once a major industrial centre of the United States, today largely abandoned, a phantom city, casualty of industrial desertion, whose development and decline recall those of a multitude of other cities in the USA and around the world. The title of this piece refers to the fading from memory and the abandonment that characterise the history of this city and of all cities that, like Buffalo, have ceased to live and to function, following the progressive shutting down of their industrial activity, and the exodus of their population. This rubble, this wreckage, witnesses to the decline of an industrial era that had been flourishing up until then, still carry the traces of the energy that brought them to life.
During my stays in the city of Buffalo, I was able to witness the striking spectacle of these abandoned factories and habitations. These industrial zones provoked such fascination in me that I started to take a closer look at the question of cities and abandoned industrial arias. The more I was drawn into these immense deserted spaces, the more it became necessary to express these images in sounds.

In kaolinite quartet I try to develop the concept of musical flexibility, understood as the ability to achieve a large variety of musical ideas that transform themselves with lack of any rigidity.

Kaolinite, or kaolin, is a type of white clay used for the construction of ceramics. Being that it is a material capable of being molded but also solidifies serves as a metaphor for the name of the piece and its intended flexibility. The above formula is that of the pure kaolinite.

Open-minded, virtuosic in performance and aurally perceptive, Klangforum Wien – one of the internationally most renowned ensembles for contemporary music – devotes itself to the artistic interpretation and expansion of experiential space.

A performance of Klangforum Wien is an event in the best sense of the word; it offers a sensual experience, immediate and inescapable; the novelty in its music speaks, acts and beguiles.

Ever since it was founded by Beat Furrer in 1985, the ensemble – which, over the years, has received a great number of awards and distinctions – has written music history:
It has presented around 600 world premieres, it boasts an extensive discography of more than 90 releases, appearing at the most prestigious concert halls, opera venues and at major music festivals.

Klangforum Wien has its own annual concert series at the Wiener Konzerthaus. Since 2009, the musicians have been sharing their comprehensive mastery of playing techniques and forms of expression with a new generation of artists in the context of their collective professorship at the University of Music, Graz.

The repertoire choice and the ensemble’s intense understanding of the compositions contribute to diversity, and are matched by the most excellent and joyful execution of the music.
