Pisces – Mime is a guitar concerto in 4 movements: 
1. Opposite forces

We are about two thousand years deep into the Age of Pisces now. My fascination with astrology – which also led to this piece being named accordingly –  lies in how it can push people to find meanings and causalities in their day-to-day. In a way, it's a way of understanding the world, similarly to religion, art or different cultural traditions. The Age of Pisces is said to be characterised by opposing forces: light and dark, life and death, forwards and backwards. For me, this piece – composed and performed during the Age of Pisces – is also about my past and present. While composing it, I kept reminding myself of that same childlike, naive excitement of making a sound and making it again and again… a habit that gave me a bit of a loud reputation as a kid.

We spent a week working together on the solo guitar part in my childhood home in the summer of 2023. During that week, my family suffered a big loss as it was time for the eldest of our family's cats to go. Thus, the Coda of this piece is dedicated to the memory of our Mausu-cat.

Pisces – Mime is a commission by Teuvo Taimioja, originally written for an ensemble of 9 musicians and solo guitar, premiered by the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra and conductor Elisar Riddelin in 2023. For the performance in 2025, the string parts were reorchestrated for string section and the piece saw some other changes too, mainly the separation of the 3rd and 4th movements, with the solo guitar cadenza by Teuvo in the middle.

Quebec-born composer pianist & organist. One-take improvisations blending neoclassical, ambient & modal colors. Exploring resonance through sound.


I am a multidisciplinary artist from La Malbaie, Canada. I am a pianist, keyboardist, organist, composer, improviser, painter, entrepreneur and a hardcore traveller. I studied classical piano at the University of Moncton with Roger Lord, electroacoustic composition/sound design and image processing with Robert Normandeau and Jean Piché. I obtained a very successful BA in electroacoustic composition from the University of Montreal in 2005. In 2004, I studied music in India with Master Prem Kumar (harmonium) and Master Sachidanandan (voice and violin.) I thus assimilated the notions of this music and developed my own musical vocabulary during this most enriching experience.

 

Since 2014, I have developed a passion for the pipe organ; an instrument of many possibilities, on which I compose and improvise in a style that fuses World music, classical music, avant-garde music, jazz and blues of the Southern US. I now use the pipe organ as an instrument that can simulate orchestral effects, thanks to the different couplings, crescendo and pedals of expressions. This allows me to create question/answer sets. I often compose my music by recording improvisations, which are translated on paper by ear and then memorized. I have developed my own scoring system that allows me to recall the stops combinations, themes and desired atmospheres. From 2014 to 2020, I cycled nearly 30,000 km around the globe. I had the privilege of presenting organ and piano concerts in several countries around the world, which allowed me to explore the various instruments and acoustics each having their own unique character. Throughout my adventures, I traded my food and lodging in exchange for my services as a musician and/or art artist. 

On a few occasions, this has led to plans for large paid frescoes, such as those commissioned by the city of Perry in the United States. In support of that, three years ago I was involved in a documentary called “La Macha!” in the company of collaborators in Costa Rica which is currently presented around the world. 
 
 
 
I am currently trying to establish contacts with the US entertainment industry to broadcast my piano album in concert and hopefully get a contract with a major recording label.  I am sending you some musical excerpts. It is a unique style combining classical, jazz and world music. Since my return from this great journey, I feel the need to create, write and structure my music. Therefore, I want to work with you to make my music accessible to the general public. I currently live in Quebec, Canada.

Acoustic-electronic folk music, sometimes classical, and a lot of experimenting.

As a composer, I work with memories, affects, and the human experience. My works are inhabited by both unexpected, childlike playfulness and deliberately calculated microtones of emotion. My interest lies in iterative composing, in which I filter and transform verbal and musical material through digital, physical, and memory-based processes, such as collage or photography. The idea of artworks as empathetic, supportive spaces for listeners to enter has grown central to my practice.
