ORIGINAL Citation (Oct 2014): Rosetta’s Plasma Consortium (RPC) has uncovered a mysterious ‘song’ that Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is singing into space. The comet seems to be emitting a ‘song’ in the form of oscillations in the magnetic field in the comet’s environment. It is being sung at 40-50 millihertz, far below human hearing, which typically picks up sound between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. To make the music audible to the human ear, the frequencies have been increased in this recording. Jonathan Ward is a true 78rpm passionate man. He has created the blog Excavated Shellac where he shares some of his discoveries and allows the free download. He has also done some compilations in cooperation with the site Dust-to-Digital via its label Parlortone.
Let’s mention that « Opika Pende: Africa at 78rpm » was nominated for a 2013 Grammy Award for Best Historical Album. And he has just completed a new one « Reeds » but the date of release has not been fixed yet.
« 78rpm records were made out of shellac, or at least coated with shellac, or a mix of shellac. But, it’s true that early records, 78rpm records, were made from the secretion of the lac beetle! »
I appreciate a lot his way of looking at music and passion for it. He is truly in love with finding 78rpm but he refuses the term « record collector » although he owns an astronomic quantity of records :
« Record collectors are eccentric people. I don’t even like the term “record collector.” They’ve been parodied far too many times. Accurately, I might add. But I could not live with myself as a “collector” without at least one person I could share sounds with. So this blog is for my friends, and for you, stranger.
This mix has been a project for a year and a half and now here it is. All the good things have an end:)

Raúl Cantizano es un guitarrista inclasificable y único, un explorador de los límites del instrumento y de los géneros. Su música, entre el flamenco, el ambient, la libre improvisación y el rock, es cinemática, y experimental en el sentido más diáfano de la palabra. La guitarra de este músico adscrito y proscrito del flamenco, iconoclasta y combativo la podéis escuchar en sus grabaciones: como ProscritosDF, con dos referencias: El Don del Exilio (2011) y Presentemiento (2014), y en Guitar Surprise: mito y geología del Canti (2017). Cantizano libera la guitarra flamenca y se acerca al ruido, frecuenta los territorios en que trabajan músicos como Fred Frith o Keith Rowe, y explora también sonidos más electrónicos.

Del desarrollo de temas trabajados en sus directos nacen ahora estas dos piezas:  “Puro y Auténtico”, que se presentan como single, y se acompaña de un videoclip hecho mano a mano con Los Voluble. Y “Bebop tango” un claro homenaje al compositor Frank Zappa.

“Puro y Auténtico”, funciona como un alegato musical (y visual) de las incongruencias a las que nos ha llevado siempre en la música, y en especial en el Flamenco, la palabra pureza. Una pieza mestiza construida con una sólida base de guitarra eléctrica flamenca, samples extraídos de Rito y Geografía del Cante, y unas bases electrónicas que llevadas al directo nos acercan a las propuestas electrónicas que el propio Cantizano ya realizara en festivales como Sónar o Sinsal junto a Niño de Elche y Los Voluble. 

Cantizano es un respetado guitarrista y compositor de piezas como “Aquí Polígono Sur” (2019). Su trabajo también destaca en las artes escénicas, una lista de sus colaboraciones confirman lo dicho; bulos.net, Andrés Marín, Rocío Márquez, Niño de Elche, Los Voluble, son sólo algunos de los nombres con los que ha trabajado. No olvidar que ha girado por Europa y todo el país acompañando a Niño de Elche en sus tres discos de estudio. Con ese bagaje, en estas dos piezas declara un claro posicionamiento a favor de la heterodoxia flamenca.

Puro y Auténtico
