"Kolado" - ar skaņu, kas skandinot izklausās pēc ganu zvaniem, ir daudzu Ziemas saulgriežu dziesmu piedziedājums. Šīs dziesmas saknes ir sēļu dziedāšanā, ar tai tipisku sekundu daudzbalsību. Kā kontrastu uzmundrinošajiem Ziemassvēktu hitiem, no kuriem neizbēgt, vēlējāmies uztaisīt arī savu mīklainā un pārdabiskā skanējuma Ziemassvētku dziesmu.

"Kolado" is the Latvian refrain of many Winter solstice songs, that sounds like shepherd's bells when chanted. The lyric concerns an ancient tradition of wearing costumes resembling mythical creatures or figures from the underside of the world, which is still practiced today by groups of mummerers who visit houses during the winter season, bringing blessings and good wishes. The second intervals are particularly typical of song from the Selonia region of Latvia. As a contrast to the modernly popular Christmas hits from which we cannot escape, we wished to create a mysterious and supernatural sound for this Christmas carol.

Latvijas iedzīvotāji mežā iet lasīt sēnes, ogas, riekstus, vēl tagad, 2025. gadā. "Ūguos guoju" stāsta par gadījumu, kad mežā atrod ko vairāk par sēnēm. Vai Tev ir gadījies mežā apmaldīties? Vai ir rādījies kāds gars zem lazdu krūma, kāda radniecīga dvēsele?

Dziesmas pamatā izmantota melodija no Barkavas, ko teikusi Magdalēna Trūps 1973. gadā, kā arī dainas no A. Bacuļa vākuma Rēzeknē 1927.g. un P. Stroda vākuma Mērdzenē.

The inhabitants of Latvia go to the forest to gather mushrooms, berries, nuts - even still, in the year of 2025. "Ūguos guoju" tells a story, when something more than shrooms is found in the forest. Have you ever been lost in the woods? Have you seen a spirit under the hazel tree, perhaps a soul that's akin?

The song is based on a medley sung by Magdalēna Trūps in Barkava, 1973. Lyrics are from traditional materials collected by A. Baculis and P. Strods in the beginning of 20th century in the southern part of Latvia - Latgale, where the Latgalian language (similar to Latvian) is spoken.

Traditional Eastern instruments are combined with modern beats and sound effects to create some exotic vibes.

Selfish Lies

The moon for March is known today as the Worm Moon. However, the roots of the moon names are lost “in the mists of time” as they say. So after some discussion, Andreas and I came to the view that this March moon was most probably named after the Old English/Saxon for ‘dragon’ which is ‘wyrm’, as it is known in the 10th century epic Beowulf, and that the common-or-garden worm was named after its mightier mythical ancestor. So here it is, and we hope you like it!
