Het neonlicht snijdt dwars door mijn hoofd  
Voetstappen echoën, de rest is verdoofd  
De wereld krimpt in tot een echo van tijd  
Spat uiteen op de muren, een verloren strijd  

Ik daal de trap af, langs verdiepingen van ramen, en gordijn  
Een schaduw zonder naam, voorgevoel van pijn  
Treden van grijs beton, huid samenspannend strak  
Waar de tijd is gaan liggen, plannen? God lacht luid - naar niets of niks ... met zoveel gemak

Beneden staat zij, lijkbleek in het wit  
In knipperend licht, rillend wijzend naar waar hij ligt  
Haar hand wijst schokkend naar wat ligt op de grond  
De wereld wordt klein – zwart, strak … samengespannen – schuimende mond  

En naast het luider wordende gebons  
Dwars door het zoemende geluid  
Van ruis en verloren radio signalen  
Kwam plots die naderende plons, zo luid  

Daarna viel de holle, klankende stilte  
Nog oorverdovend zwaar op elkaar  
En wat in één seconde kantelde  
Ligt een mensenleven later nog steeds daar...

Het lichaam van hem wiens naam we fluisterden  
In zinnen van drank, waar we nooit naar luisterden  
Een leven lang vrienden met ongeluk en ontrouw  
Nu hard op de vloer, gezicht star en grauw  

Als versleten leer, vervaagd en gescheurd  
Ligt hij erbij alsof de dood hem al zo vaak is gebeurt 
Hierdoorheen dwalend komen ze dichterbij  
De verdofte sirenes... te laat voor hem... te laat voor mij  

Ellende in focus, te scherp en te veel  
Een film zonder regisseur, beeld na beeld  
Waarom zou je dit willen? Is er dan niet meer
