The Doll’s House (version) (2012–14) is an offshoot—a re-imagining, ‘repropagation’,
intentionally reminiscent of the Deleuzo-Guattarian rhizome—
of the earlier [zygote] piece The Doll’s House, a fixed media piece to be
performed simultaneously with A Game of You, a video score for improvising
ensemble. It shares its core material with that earlier piece, but in radically
reconfigured form. Nevertheless, it retains its earlier title, which is borrowed
from the second volume of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.

ThousandUnfold was created as an active celebration of puzzles, mysteries, collaboration, and the multitude of colliding perspectives and paths that awaits, not only the creative practitioners, but all of us, at each moment of our lives. We sought to work with source material and forms that could lend themselves to the articulation of organic sense of layering, multiple perspectives, and unfolding of a sonic discourse or a path, whilst retaining solid block-units and clear spectral identities, that hint at the mechanical, the discrete, and the 1000-plateaus.

We initially had a sonic image of a mechanical (tile) puzzle in mind, and as with any work, but particularly collaborative work, the process opens itself up to questioning of modes, identities, roles, power relations, perspectives, motivation and purpose; the active working through of these became more than a mere analogy of a puzzle – it became a welcomed struggle, and a celebration of the thousandfold paths and challenges that underline our human existence.

The title also serves as an homage to the Buddhist practices that we, the authors, hold dear and seek to embrace and pass on, in our compositional and everyday activities – experiencing of the world and sound through the innocent mind and ear.Such mode of compositional operation has a methodological connection to the Schaefferian notion of ecouit reduit, and has always been at the core of our praxis.

'1000Unfold' by Anvil & Stirrup

‘Nomadische Luftspiegelung für Eva’ (2008) for fixed media and accordion, explores the sonorous territories and space(s) of interaction situated in between the composer, the performer, the instrument and the ‘work itself’, and is dedicated to Eva Zöllner – a true nomad of the contemporary accordion.

I.	GhXsts is written for and dedicated to Eva Zöllner and Heather Roche;
II.	The following notes about the GhXsts are both the programme note and performance instructions, which together with the fixed media part form the ‘score’ for the piece;
III.	For the performers, GhXsts is primarily about focused relational listening and the production of sonic presence;
IV.	The performers are the extension and material agents of the GhXsts, seeking access points and weaving through the fixed part, producing electroacoustic turbulence in between spaces;
V.	The performers aim to create a spectromorphological ‘double’ of the fixed part by seeking to match and complement its spectral, dynamic, rhythmic, spatial and harmonic behaviours;
VI.	The performers can play as little or much as desired but in each instance should seek to create a balance, contrast and interplay between the sense of heimlich and unheimlich produced by their playing, with respect to each other, the fixed media part and the acoustics and layout of the given performance space;
VII.	Whilst at times angular and sudden, all GhXsts seek for elasticity that is smooth, vaporous and effortless;
VIII.	Amplification of performers can be utilised where desired and/or where required by the acoustic properties of the performance space. Any amplification and associated processing should seek to blend and fuse the players and the fixed part to the acoustic footprint of the given space;
IX.	Full frequency range 2.0 playback system for the fixed media part is required as a minimum, with optimal playback system consisting of a 2.2 stereo playback system as the fixed part utilises the extremes of the ‘audio window’. The loudspeakers should be situated so that the performers appear in the middle of the stereo image and take up to 1/3 of the reproduced stereo basis. The audience should be situated so that stereo imaging is maximised for as many audience members as possible and no seat should be situated so that they will primarily hear only one loudspeaker.
