SleepyCast 01 - [Super Ghosts 'n Corpses: Poop Edition]

Phone recording from the "Community Voices" workshop, Dungworth Chapel, SoundPost Full English Weekend 23-25th October 2015 with Bryony Griffith and Frances Watt. This song was collected by Frank Kidson from Mr Hargreaves of Pontefract May 6th 1908, aged 71.

Soundpost was started in 2011 by Fay Hield, Sam Sweeney, Andy Bell and Jon Boden to bring music, song and dance into people's lives through participation and performance. 

The 2015 workshops were all based around The Full English project: a huge scheme run by the EFDSS to a) create an online digital archive of English traditional song, music and dance and then b) get it out there in the public domain to be seen and used in educational and community based projects.

For years I was resigned to the fact that it was impossible to write instrumental folk music that was political, but I think I've cracked it with this one!  Now you can make a statement even if you don't sing!

For those unfamailiar with "the tories" ... it is the nickname of the conservative party of the United Kingdom ... and they have been destroying my country since 2010 through cuts in public spending and dismantling and selling off public assets which we all value and rely on while telling us they're not doing it.  All that time the rich got richer and the poor got poorer - something which has brought many in our proud country to their knees.  

Last summer the Tories caved in to a protest political party with far-right tendencies that was so small that they only had one member of parliament and held a knee-jerk referendum which led to the wholly uninformed and financially desperate UK electorate voting for the famous Brexit which is now ruining the country yet further and these Tories don't seem to have any coherent plan about how to deal with it!

Please excuse my use of the Anglo-Saxon vernacular in the title ... it has led to some people accusing me of being spiteful, aggressive, hate-inciting and abusive which I wholeheartedly am not ... The words vulgar and unmannerly have also been used which is probably a fair cop!  If you're looking to be offended then you probably will find a way ... "Fuck" is a word used daily by the majority of people, and it can mean so many things ... but just to avoid any confusion ... the title of this tune uses the word in the following context:

Fuck [fuhk] (exclamation): Used alone or as a noun or verb in various phrases to express annoyance, contempt, or impatience.

example: (on finishing a particularly unpleasant task) Fuck this for a game of soldiers, I'm going down the pub.

example: (on discovering your government has lied to you for the fortieth time) Fuck the Tories, I'm going down the pub.

Starting out with the kontrabas - finding tunes that I can use to learn how to play it! Still need a bit more control over the bow when moving from top to bottom string. The tune is by Pelle Svensson from Trönö in Hälsingland.

Karolinermarsch

One of my new ones written in April 2017 during a trip away to The New Forest in the south of England. This is the first time I had had the opportunity to explore my composition away from the melody. I am very happy with what I found on this little improv ramble!

Here you can hear me and my new found musical friend Remco Sietsema from The Netherlands jamming it during an all night music sharing bender after tutoring on the Trek er es Uut 2017 accordion festival. Recorded in the stairwell of the hallway in Kasteel de Berckt at just after 3am - a musician's equivalent of the witching hour! 

I have shared this track to share the joy we both found in playing music together. Please understand that this isn't a polished performance but rather a shared exploration of ideas and a demonstration of the creative process. Everything you hear was completely improvised in the moment! The first few minutes we are finding our feet and from about 4 minutes onwards there are some truly delicious, magical things that happen!

Played in F, Remco plays the brighter Castagnari Benny in GCF and I am playing a beautiful borrowed Hohner GCF of some description which is the slightly more mellow/muted instrument you can hear in this recording.
