Glitterbeat Records is proud to announce our first ever Record Store Day release. On April 19th we will drop a very special vinyl version of Agamgam 2004, the debut album from Niger’s Tuareg sensation Bombino. The album has previously only been available as a digital download.

By any measurement the last couple of years have been an exhilarating ride for Bombino, culminating in 2013’s album Nomad, which was produced by Dan Auerbach of the arena filling Black Keys and was released to widespread acclaim. Agamgam 2004 is a beautiful contrast to the Nashville recorded Nomad. This is Tuareg music in its most pure and unadulterated form.

In late 2004, Bombino recorded acoustic versions of nine songs in the Ténéré desert, which became this, his first real album. He sings and plays several of his own compositions and also pays tribute to other Tuareg artists (Abdallah Oumbadougou, Hasso, Kedou). Recorded mostly around the campfire, his assembled friends join in on handclaps and undulations.

Bombino himself picks up the story:

I worked as a guide or cook’s helper and once the season ended, I bought a guitar and strings. I did that for some years, working wherever I could. In 2004, a Spanish team came to make a documentary film and organized a gathering in the Ténéré desert to the north of Agadez (Niger). I was there as a cook’s assistant and in the evening would play guitar in the camp. They decided to record what we were playing in the desert, in the place that’s called Agamgam. Since that’s where the recording came from, I wanted it to have the name of the place where it was made. It was completed in two days.

The rush of the desert wind, snippets of between song conversation and the sound of grazing animals in the distance are essential elements of the album’s deep atmosphere. Agamgam 2004 is not only an intimate, privileged view of Bombino's roots; it is also one of the most authentic documents of modern Tuareg music ever released.

The Agamgam 2004 LP is beautifully re-mastered from the original recordings, housed in a gatefold sleeve and pressed on 180-gram vinyl. A download code is also included. The album is being released in conjunction with the French label Reaktion and has been directly licensed from Bombino.

We’re honoured to be releasing new track ‘Cavepainter’ - four minutes of pulsating Sonic Youth’esque guitars that build into a blissful pop crescendo. It’s this transformation from the starkly sung words of media influence and being ‘gripped by the throat’ that make the latter part of the song such a thrill.

Ein für Künstler häufig verwendetes Kompliment ist, dass man ihm oder ihr seine/ ihre ständige Weiterentwicklung bescheinigt. Wir aber meinen, noch interessanter und spannender sind diejenigen, die sich immer wieder neu erfinden. Und zu genau diesen Personen gehört die junge Dame, der wir die Jubiläumsausgabe unseres Podcasts zu verdanken haben. 

Wer www.soundcloud.com/ollesusi s „Laufbahn“ hier auf Soundcloud mitverfolgt hat, der weiß, dass sie Mitte letzten Jahres den Schritt von der reinen „Konsumentin“ ran an die Decks gewagt hat. Und seitdem mit jedem Set aufs Neue begeistert, verzaubert und zum Staunen bringt. Es ist eine wohltuende Tatsache, dass das wiederkehrende Merkmal ihrer Sets nicht etwa ein „typischer“ Sound ist sondern die stets hohe Qualität, welche sich nicht zuletzt in der durchdachten Trackauswahl und den gekonnten Übergängen wiederspiegelt. 

Und auch für uns hat Susi sich wieder neu erfunden. Der Sound ist noch etwas deeper, noch etwas dunkler und streckenweise sogar noch etwas minimalistischer geworden, durchzogen von so einigen Gänsehautmomenten.

Das haett es frueher nicht gegeben #10: Olle Susi

Lange bevor es unseren Podcast gab, sind wir schon auf den Namen http://soundcloud.com/shuffle (der international ohne ä geschrieben wird) gestoßen. Als Stammmitglied der„Kater Holzig“-Crew ist er längst eine feste Größe der Berliner Club- und Electro-Szene. Seine Livesets „Santanegra“ und „Donkeyride“ sind beide in den ewigen Top Ten unserer Lieblings-Sets vertreten. Sein Sound ist einfach unverwechselbar. Düster, in Moll gehalten und oft auch leicht klagend. Kein Wunder, dass man auch beim Kölner Label http://soundcloud.com/lautundluise auf ihn aufmerksam wurde. Entsprechend riesig war unsere Freude, als uns Chris gleich zu Beginn unserer Podcast-Reihe seine Unterstützung signalisierte.

Was wir zu der Zeit noch nicht wussten: Etliche Releases standen für ihn bevor. Seine Akumal-EP auf Laut & Luise ging direkt nach Erscheinen durch die Decke und auch seine Mirror-EP auf http://soundcloud.com/katermukke schlägt ein wie eine Bombe. Da wundert es nicht, dass Künstler wie http://soundcloud.com/n-u oder Acid Pauli sich den Berliner für einen Remix oder gleich für eine Co-Produktion ins Studio holen.

Man wird also verstehen, dass wir ziemlich stolz darauf sind, dass Chris sich die Zeit nahm, für uns eins seiner sehr, sehr raren DJ-Sets zu erstellen und unseren Podcast damit zu bereichern. Schon nach dem ersten Track wird klar: Das wird eine emotionale und tiefgründige Stunde. Uns hat sie schlichtweg umgehauen, und wir sind sicher nicht die einzigen, denen es so gehen wird.

Wie hieß es bei Monty Python doch gleich: „And now for something completely different“. Passender könnte man die Vorstellung unserer neusten Podcast-Ausgabe nicht einleiten, denn etwas „komplett anderes“ erwartet den Hörer.

Es ist gar nicht so einfach, die richtigen Worte für den Künstler, dem wir dieses außergewöhnliche Set zu verdanken haben, und seinen Sound zu finden. Vielen wird http://soundcloud.com/paul-valentin vermutlich ein Begriff sein, denn seine „Valium“-Reihe gibt es nun schon seit 2010 zu hören. Sie zeichnet sich durch eine sehr seltene Einzig- und eben Andersartigkeit aus. Das erreicht Paul Valentin sicher durch die mehr als ungewöhnliche Trackauswahl, bei der auch mal reine Instrumentalstücke, die gar nicht aus dem elektronischen sondern eher aus dem klassischen Bereich kommen, verwendet werden. 

Generell spürt man bei seinem Sound die Liebe zu klassischen Instrumenten, so kommen sie auch sehr häufig in seinen Produktionen zum Einsatz. Man bekommt das Gefühl, hier entsteht wirklich noch größtenteils handgemachte Musik. Und deshalb entwickelt sich beim Hören immer der Eindruck von besonderer Tiefe, Emotionaltät und Authentizität. Besonders freut uns, dass er dies in unserem Podcast mit zwei bisher unveröffentlichten eigenen Tracks unter Beweis stellt, die es bis zum Erscheinen der EP später in diesem Jahr vorerst nur hier zu hören geben wird. Aber auch ansonsten haben seine Tracks schon den Weg in zahlreiche Sets gefunden; seine Remixe von Jonas Kimmelmann und Hannes Smith seien hier nur als Beispiele genannt.

Freut euch also auf ein Set, welches einfach wunderschön anders ist. Es ist zwar kurz aber dafür um so intensiver. Und es lädt ein zum Augenschließen, Davontreiben, Eintauchen und sich verzaubern lassen!
