3 Tracks grabbed live from the Stoch 4 Lunetta instrument. Drum track was run first against a sparse metronome. Two melodic lines dubbed over; once the loop point had been fixed. Chromaticism was determined by the native trilling of the Stoch. Final mix balanced out in PC software; just light filtering and pan/levels.

The Stoch generously delivered structure without prior deliberation - it was challenging for this purpose to achieve interaction with the triggers to form a plausible tight loop from the percussive bursts. The two instrumental tracks are bound together by switch selected scale distributions. Their triggering was manipulated to hook motifs into the phrasing accents of the base percussion loop.

Axial [disquiet0153-groovelock]

Used my own track - Axial - already randomly generated and waiting to come to terms with. Picked up  Steve Moshier's — No Cause for Alarm (disquiet0153-groovelock) - a solid contrast of speed/density and sat well harmonically. Stacked the loops in PC sequencer, with some re-pitching into bass and scattering into higher registers. Braided a long echoing software synth across to hold it all together and mimic Steve's voicing.

Spoiled for choice with so many great samples ... used a couple more as meat for effects/filters and sprinkled them through. Thanks to:

The Assignment: Create a track from two locked grooves.

This week’s Disquiet Junto project builds on last week’s. Last week, 67 different musicians uploaded as many locked grooves. This week we’ll make new music atop the locked grooves. Here are the steps. Note that there are some options:

Step 1: Choose two locked grooves from the set at http://goo.gl/0s4WmM. You can accomplish this in several ways. You can choose random numbers between 1 and 67 and use those tracks, or you can just select the tracks you most want to work with. Note that most of the tracks should be set to allow, via Creative Commons, for non-commercial re-use. However, if you aren’t sure, please contact the musician to confirm.

Step 2: Make a new track alternating the two locked grooves for between one and two minutes.

Step 3: Use the track that resulted from step 2 as the foundation for a new piece of music. Transform it as you desire, which might include altering the foundational track and adding new material atop it.

Step 4: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 5: Listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Length: Your finished work should be between roughly 1 and 2 minutes long.

 


CoAxial [disquiet0154-grooveunlocked]

After a couple of failed experiments, decided to keep it simple and cadge around sampling of the melodic hints from the originals. Nuts and bolts sequencing, but set up the playback as if being run through 'shutters' at mismatched rates, so the coincidence varies. The Salamander version features as a highly fragmented&delayed background drift.

Tachistoson [disquiet0155 - Mixmatch]

OK, hope it doesn't stretch the rules too far... A year spent jamming tables in a SQL warehouse; did grow some vegetables, but no decent date ordered catalogue of audio projects. Synopsis? = calendar is represented here by 12 months detailed daily weather data from logging station at the end of the road, downloaded, stitched and mangled per DBA's professional manner. Pushed as series into Arduino controller, and spooled back out algorithmically as MIDI for recording. Approx. 5 sec each month.

As a 'journal' it reflects the spirit and experiences of the year, and summarisies the audio techniques I've mucked about with.

Disquiet Junto Project 0156: Audio Journal 2014
The Assignment: Create a sonic diary of the past year with a dozen five-second segments.

This week’s project is a sound journal, an audio history of the past year. You will select a different audio element to represent each of the past 12 months of 2014. You will then select one five-second segment from each of these audio elements. Then you will stitch these dozen five-second segments together in chronological order to form one single one-minute track. There should be no overlap or gap between segments; they should simply proceed from one to the next.

These audio elements will most likely be of music that you have yourself composed and recorded, but they might also consist of phone messages, field recordings, or other source material. These items should be somehow personal in nature, suitable to the autobiographical intention of the project; they should be of your own making, and not drawn from third-party sources.

When done, upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud. Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

A very pretty glass with curves made many harmonics as the ice went in. Took around 15 samples. A couple were reserved for waveform synthesis - the rest went straight onto a 'drum' track. From there it came together quickly.
Nothing but ice, glass and water.

Background: Longtime participants in, and observers of, the Disquiet Junto series will recognize this single-sentence assignment as the very first Disquiet Junto project, the same one that launched the series on the first Thursday of 2012. Revisiting it a year and two years later, on the first Thursdays of 2013 and 2014, provided a fitting way to begin the new year. Now, at the start of the fourth year of the Disquiet Junto, it is a tradition. A weekly project series can come to overemphasize novelty, and it’s helpful to revisit old projects as much as it is to engage with new ones. Also, by its very nature, the Disquiet Junto suggests itself as a fast pace: a four-day production window, a weekly habit. It’s beneficial to step back and see things from a longer perspective.

"Attack" was eliminated using a combination of my trusted E-bow fed through an EHX POG2 with its attack setting jacked all the way up for max swell. Tape Delay, Phaser, Reverb added for space travel (or ocean travel as the case may be here).

PROJECT

Create a dense stack of attack-free tonal material from one audio source.

Step 1: Choose an instrument that can create extended tones.

Step 2: Record a short loop of a single held tone on that instrument. Use a volume pedal or other tool to eliminate the attack at the start of the tone.

Step 3: Create many more such loops, all with the same instrument, and layer them atop the original loop.

Step 4: Record a document of these layered loops lasting approximately 1 minute.

Step 5: Upload your completed track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 6: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

A MicroBrute synth connected in feedback-loop through a loop pedal set to 3-seconds with a slight fade out.

Three layers were recorded.  Each one is a single note sustained throughout the loop.  One of them (lower) is a triangle wave with the LFO modulating its frequency, and the other two are square waves with the LFO modulating the pulse width.  

Each layer is a loop that is permanently recording the output of the synth and feeding it back into it 3 seconds later, where it mixes with the sustained note creating textures and patterns by cancelling some parts of the wave and clipping others.  The result of this mix gets out of the synth and back into the loop pedal where it gets recorded and fed back into the synth once again, starting the process all over and creating the evolving sound.
