I know it made you angry not to heed the words you'd say.
But I was in a different place, I went a different way.
I meant it as a compliment, the fruit of what you'd grown.
I took the tools you taught me and I made them all my own.

You went away before your time, before I hit my stride.
But if you're looking down on me, you know how hard I tried.
To be the kind of person who would speak the truth aloud.
To always pay it forward, yeah, I think that you'd be proud.

Thank you for your guidance, the skills that your shared.
