The opening section of “Tome of Stars”, titled “Item 1: Anthesis”, comprises 21 poems that chronicle the emergence and flowering of a romantic relationship, structured around the botanical metaphor of anthesis, the period during which a flower blooms. 

“Leaves of Stars” gathers moments from personal memory, mythology, and literature to create a layered tribute to the beloved, using the motif of sacred trees as a unifying image. The sonnet moves between real places (a tree outside her dormitory, a banyan on a volcanic island), and mythic landscapes, such as Tolkien’s Valinor. These trees serve both as physical settings for intimacy and as metaphors for enduring love, spiritual connection, and cosmic beauty. By drawing connections between natural beauty, shared memory, and mythic narrative, the beloved is constructed not just as a person remembered, but as a presence who is woven into the spiritual and symbolic structure of the cosmos itself. The final couplet unites these threads into a vision of transfigured union, immortalized in writing and through the celestial symbolism of “leaves of stars.”.
