ABOUT:
A record of big pop moments and globe trotting arrangements in technicolor, these songs focus on a five year period of struggle, self discovery, growth and renewal in the life of songwriter/record-maker David Karsten Daniels. During this time DKD got married, had a kid and experienced a crisis of self-identity. Losing himself in self-help books and the Enneagram, many of these songs appear as mantras for a new husband and father trying to trade control and ego for connection and meaning. While a few of the songs flash back to easygoing youthful times, most deal very directly with the day to day of trying to survive and thrive in a new reality (with a handful of the songs following DKD into alternate realities as Larry Ellison, a Ghanaian treasure hunter and a rabbit). End the end, the album is a sort of letting go - shedding a pervasively melancholic youth, discarding a fabricated self in order to participate in an ever-evolving and interdependent family unit. 

Along the way David fell deep in love with the sounds of Fela Kuti, Congolese and Indonesian music, fun. and Kanye West. Roughly half of these songs feature extensive collaboration with songwriter/producer/filmmaker Chris Walker (Driver Friendly/Hopeless Records/Danger Films) whose focus on rhythm, faster tempos and relentless hooks helps gives the record a feeling of urgency and buoyancy rarely found on David's previous albums.  

A handful of the other songs feature the inspired performances of friends and family - among them David’s wife and son, his brother and sister-in-law Dane and Abbey Daniels and friends Kyle Henson and Ben Jousan. In at surprising turn of events, Austin, TX singer Lex Land (NBC’s ‘The Voice’) and Dallas rapper -topic briefly appear...

‘Spells’ merges programmed piano pieces with live instruments, combining the controllable technical world and the often unpredictable aspects of live improvisation. In some ways it continues where his underground debut ‘Gravity’ left off, though a lot of weight is lifted, making room for a lighter and more energetic listen. Friend and fellow Erased Tapes artist Nils Frahm mixed and mastered both albums. Ben is not a master pianist like his dear friend, but his sound collages are so meticulously designed that after hearing the result an impressed Nils declared: “from now on, if anyone asks – this is a real piano”. 

His intricate, humanised programming – enhanced by drummer Achim Färber, cellist Anton Peisakhov and harpist Lara Somogyi, and a considerate selection of echoes, delays and compressors – has been used to create a hybrid sound that intends to deceive, question and challenge existing listening habits. Utilising the contrast between reduction and decoration, ‘Spells’ can be seen as a quest to find out how much or how little composition is required to constitute a song. Why the ear can and should be deceived about the authenticity of instruments. What significance these instruments have within this process, and why the personal perception of balance and sound exclude ultimate truths. 

Linking the two albums are the four movements of ‘Nocturne’, an ever-developing conversation that on occasion flirts with the grandeur of compressed rock drums. The first single, ‘Golden Times 1’, received a world premiere by BBC 6 Music’s Mary Anne Hobbs, proclaiming it as "incredible." An alternative version of ‘Sleepers Beat Theme’ – composed for the soundtrack to a short film about the Trans-Siberian Express – opened Jon Hopkins’ Late Night Tales album from 2015, who noted “I thought it was such a calming and sensitive piece that sounded to me like the beginning of something...the warmth and depth of the sound entrances me every time”. 

Though ‘Spells’ and ‘Gravity’ are his first albums recorded under his own name, as acclaimed electronic producer HECQ he’s released nine albums since 2003, exploring everything from ambient to breakcore. He has simultaneously established himself as a trusted composer and sound designer, working for a wide array of clients including Amnesty International and Marvel Comics; composing for feature films, games, art installations and convention opening titles.

After embracing this demanding line of work, in 2010 Ben felt the need to explore his roots and early education, which inspired these albums under his own name. Born in 1981 as the third child of opera singer Deirdre Boysen and actor Claus Boysen, his classical music training on piano and guitar began when he was seven years old; the works of Bruckner, Wagner and Bach laid an important foundation. Rediscovering this music shared with his parents – united with the sounds of Autechre, Cristian Vogel and Jiri.Ceiver to Pink Floyd and Godspeed You! Black Emperor – brought back an understanding of why he wanted to write music in the first place.

Villa Nah is back after a five-year hiatus as the critically acclaimed synth duo returns to live form with their new material, of which earlier on Spring 2016 released ‘Stranger‘ gives us a sneak peek. Love Chance is the second single from the upcoming second album “Ultima”. Duo’s distinctive sound is filled with ageless synth pop doused in dreamy synthesizers and Juho Paalosmaa’s even more forlorn vocals.

Villa Nah´s Juho & Tomi: “For the summer of '16, we wanted to serve a sunny slice of romance, the sweet kiss of a Love Chance. With ripples of synths and sheer optimism, this is our soundtrack for those July afternoons.”

Villa Nah is a Finnish pop duo consisting of Juho Paalosmaa and Tomi Hyyppä. Villa Nah's sound is heavily influenced by 1980's synthpop. Producer/DJ Jori Hulkkonen co-produced the band's debut album Origin and it was released in Finland in March 2010 by Sähkö Recordings's sub label Keys of Life. The album reached number seven on the Official Finnish Album List. 

The East Helsinki pairing of Juho Paalosmaa and Tomi Hyyppä consolidated their position by supporting OMD on their UK Autumn tour. However, the two childhood friends went quiet afterwards and Juho Paalosmaa formed SIN COS TAN with ‘Origin’  co-producer Jori Hulkkonen;

SIN COS TAN’s three acclaimed albums to date, ‘Sin Cos Tan’ , ‘Afterlife’  and ‘Blown Away’ , plus their most recent EP ‘Smile Tomorrow Will Be Worse’ , filled the void left by VILLA NAH. But the Finnish duo are now back!

Live dates are planned for this summer, for example next one at Flow Festival, Helsinki on Sunday 14.8.2016 while the new “Ultima” album is set to feature songs such as ‘Love Chance’ and ‘Stranger’.
