I remember this weekend. We drove up from London with Anton and Vikas from Main Source Promotion. We hired a car for the journey. We did this radioshow, we met Marcus Intalex (i think it was) on his record store in some market upstairs. Our actual gig was in an internet cafe. Remember this was 97, so the internet was something quite odd... people drinking coffee on computers, very bizarre environment...

We went to Sankeys Soap for a bit, I remember the big curtains seperating the venue. Then we went to some late night warehouse/club place and Irvine Welsh was DJing.

They Don't Know

This was a fun gig... i remember the bloke climbing up the tent pole (bloody massive pole) and security turning off the music till he got down. Last thing you want is Freddy shouting at ya in front of thousands of people. He got down lol!

Check for the impromptu version of the 'War' tune we did with Freddy back in 2002 from our album 'Stayfresh' on Moving Shadow. The lyrics still have meaning in 2013!

Yeah, this was a fun gig... and i drank plenty of Black Rat cider :-/

Aquasky with Daddy Freddy and Frilla MC live at Breaksday, Glade Festival 2008

We were asked by the lovely Annie Nightingale to do a 30min DJ set live from Glastonbury on Radio 1 in 2005. We wrote the Radiohead booty exclusively for the show. I got the idea for the 'Open Your Eyes' vocal whilst watching a film, but I cant remember what the film was called... Maybe 'I Love Huckerbies' or something??? No idea now... but it worked so well on this tune. We then kicked it with our Meat Katie collab which was an exclusive as well... we followed that with Mylo bootleg we also knocked up for the show... 

This was followed by a tune we collabed with Phil Hartnoll of Orbital on that came out on Passenger on the Teamplayers album. This was followed by a track we did called 'Boom' (record skipped on that one - keepin it old school yall!) which was suppose to go on our 'Stayfresh' album on Moving Shadow but we didnt have room for it, so we released it on 777 with a Breakfastaz remix on the flip.

Last up was a collab we did ElHornet from Pendulum called 'Girls & Boys' which was also on Teamplayers. And yes, it was totally rammed in that tent. I remember looking out and seeing the Breakfastaz and Inchie from Control Z (PYRAMID) as well as two of my old mates Craig and Chris from legendary rap crew Killa Instinct.

This Glasters was I think the wettest on record. The tent we played in was struck by lightening an hour after we finished. My tent that night got flooded and was left at the site. My sleeping bag and all my clothes soaked. I remember the next morning seeing a man in a canoe going across the site. And to this day I wonder... "who thinks to lug a bloody canoe to Glastonbury???"

I know mixes can be done in computers so its lock solid and tight as a gnats a*se, but I am bored of mixes like that. I want to do my mixes live, so you can hear me working the decks. Yeah, there is a push and a shove here and there, but thats the beauty of DJing with decks. I could do it all internally in Serato and that part of it will be gone... but this is how I perform in clubs, so why pretend!

(and yeah, I know many a DJ who times up their music so its all the same speed when they go out to clubs, but thats cheating isnt it? Like having a piano that tells you what keys to play!)

I wrote a kinda story to go with this mix and will try and locate it one day. Basically the title of the mix is 'Every Record Tells A Story' and the story was just my memories of each piece of music and how i managed to obtain it on vinyl. Its a bit of a trainspotters journal in all honesty but I liked the concept and would love to do a CD like this one day...

The ultimate no-nonsense party-rocking, festival-shocking combo, Hot Cakes Live brings together three of the finest DJs on the UK bass circuit - Deekline, Ed Solo and JFB - with the microphone talents of the mighty Rubi Dan. This raucous trio of renowned turntable killers will be blowing up main stages across the UK and beyond this summer, coming through in full effect to get those bassbins seriously booming.

A bass music icon from the days of his Platinum-selling UK garage anthem I Don't Smoke Da Reefer, Deekline recently released (with Ed Solo) new album Bounce 'n' Shake, a tour de force of booty bass, jungle, soul, breaks, dubstep, drumstep and drum 'n' bass sent down with the kind of assurance one might expect from a DJ who has sent bodies flying round the room at club venues across the globe for more than a decade. Expect brazen and bombastic badboy anthems accompanied by skilled, selective scratch techniques capable of hyping up even the most taciturn of crowds from an artist who recently proved his hipster credentials with remixes for the likes of Lethal Bizzle and Laidback Luke.

Joining Deekline on stage will be partner in crime Ed Solo, an expert studio guru whose sublime engineering skills are equalled only by his nack for a booty-bouncing hook and an ability to throw down on the turntables. When it comes to pouring on the bass frequencies, Ed's skills are unrivalled, whether the tune in question be a killer dubstep cut, an upfront slice of drum 'n' bass, a booming booty house number or a funky, electro-fuelled breaks 12". Ed has DJed all over the world, bringing his unique ear for a heavy slice of wax to up for it crowds as far afield as the UK and Australia. This is an artist who long ago stepped out to claim his rightful place in the grand pantheon of bass music heroes.

Our final Hot Cakes Live decknician is two-time UK DMC champ JFC, who will be slipping his unique brand of turntable exhibitionism into the mix. Described by no less than Fatboy Slim as "The Thinking Man's Grandmaster Flash", this Brighton-based DJ and producer is a scratch daddy for the bass music generation, an artist who is as likely to beat juggle dubstep rollers as he is to throw down live remixes of classic hip-shaking 12"s (check out his barmy take on DJ Shadow's Midnight in a Perfect World or infamous four-turntable reworking of Fatboy Slim's Right Here Right Now on YouTube for a taste of what to expect). With releases on iconic labels such as Hospital records, Rat Records, Skint Records, Hot Cakes and GhettoFunk, JFB has DJed all over the world from LoveBox and Glastonbury to Canada's iconic Shambhala and Bestival's Big Top Stage, where he's a huge favourite. An infectious brand of subterranean pop fused with soul, funk and breaks cleverly spliced together to create the distinctive sound of Grinny Grandad. Based on the scissors and string mind of Chris Morton, the bands reputation for originality has earned them shows at major festivals including Glastonbury and Beat-Herder .

Described as 'Motown meets Def Jam' by Groove Armada for their 2010 release 'The Good Girl', 2013 sees Grinny Grandad set to release their latest EP, 'The Car-Bootleg'. The lead track, 'Monty' which samples Fleetwood Mac's 'Oh Well', spliced seamlessly with a recreation of the 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' theme song is superbly topped with the vocals of Claire Swain. It is this gem that perfectly showcases the bands exuberance, earning the track comparisons to Jon Bonham of Led Zeppelin from BBC Radio 6 host, Tom Robinson.

The quirky undertone of 'Swim Fish' blends vocals reminiscent of 1930's Pioneer Days Mickey Mouse with hard hitting breaks. An unlikely marriage of music and yet it works incredibly well. The ability to successfully shift, merge and mix genres comes natural to Grinny Grandad. 

The final track on the EP, 'Q The Pimp', a floor filling break beat anthem with a smart groove, promises to render you helpless as the guitar riffs intensify and the rhythm swells fittingly paired with the line 'everybody rumble.' Not just anyone can sample PJ and Duncan and get away with it.

This summer Grinny Grandad will be performing on the festival circuit, starting with Beat-Herder festival in early July.
