We close out Season 2 of Party Of One with a highly recommended selector coming from Moscow to LA - @sokolovalexander

Alexander is a music lover, DJ, and vinyl collector, who recently made the big move from Moscow to LA. As he stomps over his new grounds, he plans to continue diving deeper into music and sharing his discoveries regularly. 

Although he’s not a fan of labels, cliches, and specific music tags, he has grown his love for music through a background of DJing and some promo activities in Moscow in early-mid 2010s. Alexander had the opportunity to bring the founders of Norwegian house and techno label Sex Tags Mania (DJ Sotofett and DJ Fett Burger) alongside with other artists to Moscow scene. He also shared the stage with artists like Legowelt, DJ TLR, Ulrich Schnauss. 

He draws inspiration from various genres, eras, and moods. From balearic to ambient, from Italo disco to acid house. What excites him the most about DJing and exploring new music is stepping out of the ordinary, experimenting, and creating unexpected combinations that evoke emotions. 

“My latest mix is a personal and emotional journey, connecting my past and present. It's a compilation of tracks that have a special place in my heart, that have been waiting for the right moment to come together. This is just the beginning of my musical adventure in LA, and I'm excited to share it with you and the audience.”

DJ Himitsu comes through with a selection of well padded floaty bangers and hot steppers. 

More often than not you’ll find the London-based Japanese dj and producer behind the counter at Vinyl Delivery Service or manning the decks at Brilliant Corners. I met up with Himitsu (real name Shin) a few months ago at VDS and besides being the very best of company, obviously left with some top digs. And returned the next day for more. 

Check out Himitsu’s debut 12 inch Three Acid on the Australian outfit Lunatic Music. As the title suggests it’s packed with caustic burners and word is there’s more to come so stay tuned. @djhimitsu25

Joining us this month bring some heavy weight dub sounds for a guest mix, is one of the heads behind @vesselrec, local low-end theorist @norachisound 

Q&A:

Lava Brain: Where was this mix recorded & was there a particular mood or feeling you hoped to convey to the listener?

Norachi: Recorded in my lounge room, at home in Castlemaine. I wanted to record something deep and dubby you could listen to with a big soundsystem or some average car speakers and it still makes sense.

LB: With your own production, do you have a go-to piece of gear/plug-in or something else that helps to spark your creative process? 

N: I've recently sold a bunch of gear because I find myself most creative with a really minimal space and setup, my go-to right now would be the Roland jv1080 or Push 2. Listening to music outside of the studio helps a lot, especially driving. I'll hear something that grabs my attention and go back and try to capture whatever interested me about it or sample it.

LB: Anything in store for Vessel in 2024 or any other projects on the horizon? 

N: We've got two records in the works, one very soon hopefully and another probably mid-year. Both from previous Vessel artists, and some remixes from a legend in the extended vessel family. Keep an eye on our instagram where we'll post more details shortly.

LB: What's something within a community you're a part of that you'd like people to know about?

N: Music wise - Lunatic Music, the Melbourne label run by some friends Bart & Jack, they consistently book interesting djs most people have probably never heard of for their Lunacy party at Angel Bar, and release crazy music that they love.
