AGYA is excited to go on tour with the German science ship MS Wissenschaft! As part of the Science Year 2022, the swimming science center will house the exhibition “Nachgefragt” (engl. “Participate!”), travelling through Germany and Austria between May – October 2022. AGYA will be on board exploring the exciting research possibilities of synchrotrons with an interactive exhibition station “Jetzt geht ́s rund – bei AGYA” (engl. “AGYA picks up the pace”). Visitors will be able to learn about particle accelerators and run different test series with an interactive synchrotron simulation. The sound installation ‘Future Sounds of Megacities’ with recorded street sounds from Cairo and Berlin composed by Amin Fallaha and Tobias Hagelstein made the process of technological innovation in urban mobility audible. The DJ set was presented at the AGYA panel discussion 'Voices of Global Berlin – Big City Life' during the Salon Sophie Charlotte 2022 in Berlin.

Welcome to the podcast ‘Happyopolis’! We here at the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) invite you to join us as we explore how can we make city life healthier, more social and of course, happier. 

In each episode, we will be featuring cities across the Arab world and Germany developing ideas, concepts, and solutions for a happy and healthy city life. These are solutions that are not only worth discovering but also worth sharing with your own community. Our host, Dr. Louise Lambert, will be your guide on this exciting adventure. She will be joined by a diverse array of guests, including urban planners, architects, positive psychologists, public health and sustainability experts, engineers, artists, policy-makers and many more.

The first episode in this series is about buzzing and busy Berlin. And stress: the kind that comes from living in a dense and still growing city. Can we better protect the mental health and wellbeing of residents by minimizing stress factors? The capital of Germany has become a hotspot in the scientific study of urban stress and healthy cities.

In the second episode, we join you from Kuwait City. Built for the car due to its high temperatures in the summer, pedestrian infrastructure and public transportation has taken a bit of a back seat in this city. This has resulted in very high rates of physical inactivity and obesity. However, the winds of change are blowing, as public health and urban design with a focus on walkability have now taken center stage in the national agenda.

Happyopolis - Kuwait City Episode

The third episode is about the vibrant Egyptian metropolis Cairo, the fastest growing Arab city. It is known for its traffic jams, excessive noise, and significant pollution, and yet, Cairo is the place of some very promising initiatives to expand and modernize the public transportation system to make the city more sustainable and livable.
