I started writing songs about 9  years ago after a gap of nearly 35 years. This is the original tape of Beirut and is the first song I ever wrote and recorded, way back in 1982 at Vibrasound Studios in Sheffield where ABC and The Human League sometimes hung out. I didn't write any more after this until 2010.   I wrote this at the time  after a week trusting my life to a  a conscript Israeli  tank driver on an Advanced  Rock Climbers instructor's course in North Wales. He  had  served in Lebanon and told me all about it.  The whole thing in the Lebanon got out of hand and was a total mess. It wasn't meant to be a dig at the Israelis just a call for peace.  The record company didn't see it that way so it never got anywhere except some radio play.   Strange that the Human League came out with The Lebanon a few weeks  later and had a hit with it but you can't copyright an idea so good luck to them. As a drummer it was weird playing guitar and singing on the track and programming a Linn Drum Machine for the record rather than playing acoustic drums  but it was the synth world of the 1980's . Dave Strang and the band who were called LISTEN did great backing.
