Marcos Valle - Estrelar

Marcos Valle is back again, this time with the almighty ‘Estrelar’, his most well known disco/boogie track co-written with Leon Ware. Added hints of Yacht Rock too!

The video, filmed in Rio in the early 1980’s, is particular special and is well worth 5 minutes of your time. Marketed as “workout music" at the time, ‘Estrelar’ was his best-selling record with a total of around 90,000 sales.

‘Estrelar’ is taken from his 1983 self titled LP released on Som Livre. 

Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti - Alleluia

Two of the masters of the Brazilian Boogie sound joined forces to make a self-titled LP released in 1982 that epitamised the sound of early 80’s Rio de Janeiro. Synths and keys float over razor sharp samba, jazz and 2-step drum grooves backed by huge layers of horns. Production is as shiny, bright and ultra clean as it ever got!

‘Alleluia’ is a mid tempo groover, with rich horns, guitar, synth and vocal lines. An end of the night jam if ever there was one.

Released on the LP mentioned above and also on 7” in 1983.

Brooklyn's Breakdown Brass dropped yet another killer 45! They've unleashed an original juggernaut entitled "Harrow", a follow-up to their smash debut 45 "Monmouth b/w Next Episode" (Kept Records) and sophomore 45 "The Horseman b/w Mary Jane" (Mixto Music). Driving, dirty horns are punctuated by intense trombone and baritone sax solos - prepare your stank face.  Harrow is also featured in Will Arnett's new Netflix show "Flaked".

The B-side "Nautilus (Hijacked)" is a dance-floor burner that pays homage to Bob James, whose track Nautilus has been heavily sampled by Slick Rick, Eric B & Rakim, Run-DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, Onyx, Wu Tang Clan, Big L, Pete Rock and about 300 others. Throw in some Herbie Mann/Beatnuts and you got yourself a hit!

The members of Breakdown Brass stay busy - touring and recording with Ikebe Shakedown, Antibalas, Lee Fields, Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Monophonics and many others. Led by Nadav Nirenberg on trombone, their unique combination of heavy Afro-Funk with the sizzle of Balkan Brass has caught the eye of Gilles Peterson, NPR, BBC and more.

The first 12" release, named 'you are the prototype', is a V.A. with tracks by Raär, Axefield and William Caycedo, spanning three different vibe's, all within Susan's comfort zone. 

On the A side the killer lo-fi house vibes of 'Santori' meet hypnotic acid bumps in this late-nite party gem, keeping your ears ringing all the way back home. Axefield creates ample room on the B side for his deconstructed synth filled 'SNY' in which Japanese and Jamaican voice samples culminate in just under 9 minutes of bliss. William Caycedo's 'SNY' remix snaps you straight back to the dancefloor, with percussion as crisp as it gets and a baseline as low as it goes, this one has that instant deep gut reaction.

Cottam's Ruff Draft label reaches release number 9 with a stunning double drop from Milo Johnson AKA DJ Nature. Always one of our favourite artists, we've loved Milo's music for years at Ruff Draft and his tracks on Golf Channel, Sound of Speed and Jazzy Sport never leave the box, so we are blown away to present to you two future classics.

'Alfred' is a masterclass in raw rhythmic production, kicking off with popping old school drums and builds into an uptempo jack track with a melancholy and depth missing from a lot of modern club tracks.

'Blood On Your Hands' is sonic bliss, a stunning polemic using a speech from a 60s episode of The Twilight Zone that still resonates today, about the futile loss of life in wars run by people who don't fight them and monetary interests placed over lives. Brooding sub bass and dub techno sensibilities combine with a lolloping shuffling groove for a darker head nodder with a serious and sadly still pertinent message.

'Sleepless Nights' is another busy cut, with gurgling acid wrestling with more serene and soulful synth smears. Bristling and brimming with energy, it's a fluid bit of techno that is as classic as it is fresh. 'Dry Tears' is another fulsome arrangement, with light and shiny synths, gritty bas notes and airy hi hats all jostling for your attention and last of all, 'Moms Spirit' soars off to the horizon on a smooth house tip, with rueful pads, sweeping strings and elastic bass really getting you on your toes. Deborah Gray and Roy Nicolson formed ARVO in the early 80’s, high on the fumes of European synth-pop. After releasing their sole album, 1984’s Luna, the group evaporated. Like an island vanished from the map, ARVO has since only resurfaced in the realm of misty lore. Now, New Zealand label Strangelove Music are reviving two choice cuts from Luna along with remixes by Australia’s Hysteric and France’s Shelter. We bring you the original version of “Bikini,” premiered this week by Frosty on Open End, his Red Bull Radio voyage around the world. “Bikini” is a samba-hipped twister fit to frolick on the sand with Lizzy Mercier Descloux or Antena. Enjoy this sunsplashed slow-mo synth stunner.
