Eclectics release 'Let It Pass' by Statues

Essex-based trio Statues return to Eclectics with another four-track EP. There’s no change to the MO – two exceptional OGs rock up to the party, each with a +1 in the form of a killer remix.

Rotunda is all swagger and shoulders. A mid-paced beast that swaps sharp edges for a slow roll, that rocks… but gently. The synthetic bass dives deep, providing balance and ballast while the upper register takes advantage of this free reign. Zither glissandos ebb and flow while guitar lines drift in and out, marshalled into time by a neck-snapping shuffle with a sense of slow, unhurried purpose.

Showing a similar, singular focus, is Gold Suite, AKA Bali’s Joey Fitzgerald. Opening the original up wide enough to drop in a piano, acoustic guitar and lead line licks, he builds a remix that is in equal parts balearic groover and 3am mover. The result is a certified banger that will see arms raised quicker than any armed bank heist.

Lessons, by contrast, sees Statues in repose. A simple cymbal pattern leads the way as organ, strings and bass join in, laying the ground for the mournful vocal refrain “The past is a lesson”. What follows is a blissful slice of horizontal balearica pitched perfectly for these times. With the world opening its arms to us once again, this is the soundtrack for us all to sway into its embrace.

Coyote take the remix reins, their deep dub adding lift to the kick and bounce to the bass. They pare back and stretch out, filling the space with found fragments and soft sonic furnishings. The result is a very different destination, but one that still wraps itself around you like a welcome hug from an old friend. Expansive synths and tightly echoed effects ride the wave of a way-out sound without losing sight of the original.

It’s a lesson to us all.

July 2021: Eclectics release The Outside/Suburbia by James Bright 

James Bright returns to Eclectics with his first original material since February 2020. The world is a different place these days and The Outside/Suburbia is very much an EP for the times.

Bright offers up two new original tracks that marry tension and release, optimism and reminiscence, the past and the present. Opener The Outside makes a dash for the dancefloor with a linear, laser-guided focus. A driving, dark disco throb, it’s a mid-paced monster that delivers kosmiche class, with soaring vocals and strings sitting against metal-machine rhythms and an irresistible bass backdrop.  

Suburbia treads a similar path – dark, brooding, building… Bright gently folds layer on layer, taking us with him every step of the way as he adds subtle acid flourishes and dynamic rhythmic shifts that lead us in to the middle of a progressive dancefloor with no idea of how we got there and no intention of leaving. 

And the fun doesn’t stop there…The EP also comes with two radical reworks that fix a new, and entirely unexpected focus on these originals.  

First up is Woolfy, who rebuilds The Outside from the ground up. It’s a root and branch rebuild that occasionally offers respectful glimpses of the pre-existing structure – exposed beams poking through the new layers of melody that throw open the windows and flood the place with light. The result is a Balearic beat that still hits hard, but with gentler textures softening the blow. 

Sean Johnston meanwhile, here in his Hardway Bros guise, plunders not just the source material, but also the past in his pursuit of perfection. The result is a tableau tapestry brimming with emotion and breaks for days. Using samples and motifs snatched from deep within our collective unconscious, Johnston gives a knowing nod to nostalgia on his rework of Suburbia. This is no rose-tinted recollection, however. Rather than wallowing in how good things were, it’s a celebration of how good things can be again.

Parma-based singer and songwriter Loreni’s released her synth-pop version in 2020 and here the always charming Mushrooms Project are joined by Deep88 to provide four subterranean reworks. Translated as ‘snow in May’, the song alludes to the confusing and unexpected times through which the world is currently living, and Loreni’s bittersweet vocals offer ample inspiration for the chosen remixers to work their respective magic here. Fellow Parma residents Marco and Girogio unite under their Mushrooms Project banner with three distinct interpretations.
The duo’s work is always immaculately formed, and here they open proceedings with their ‘Disco Maxi Single’ version, where throbbing synth bass and atmospheric waves are joined by crisp machine drums for a pulsating club workout. Their ‘Balearic’ mix finds them in familiar territory as they join Leo Almunia to compose a blissful soundtrack to immersive ocean-side reflections. As the name suggests, their ‘Rave’ version is designed for dubbed out dancefloors, with bass-heavy rhythm and wigged-out effects periodically lifted by dreamy chords and distantly gliding vocals. Finally, Alessandro ‘Deep88’ Pasini arrives with his authentic dream house version, with emotive pads caressing Loreni’s reverb-soaked vocals over a chugging four/four rhythm.

[BM044] AINZ - Superficial - (LAFRENCH TOAST REMIX)

Label favourites Balearic Ensemble return to the fore following last summer’s spectacular ‘Cachonda’ EP, this time with a 12” treasury of wonderful, eclectic dancing music of the highest balearic order. They’re joined by Das Komplex, notable for recent excursions on DJ Harvey’s Mercury Rising, to round out their five-track excursion for the label: this is the Mediterráneo EP.

Opener ‘Pitiusas First’ sets the tone with dizzy, downbeat percussions as a bass guitar skates and glissades underfoot; soaring, starry-eyed synth work and Latin organ stabs in concerto. This homage to the islands and islets of Ibiza comes with a note of melancholy, or nostalgia: waking up to find that your best years might have evaded you - and celebrating the fact. It’s a maturing of the Residentes sound in a way we haven’t heard before; a gorgeous moonlight serenade, the last tango on Formentera, and a tip for orange-tinted sunsets all summer long.

Second track ‘Almendros y Drones’ takes us deeper into the throes of that distinctive Mediterranean sound with dizzying arpeggios and analogue bass over teetering hihats and fizzing synths; it’s an eruptive, volcanic beast of a track that will take liberties with your dancefloor. Over-the-top filter action and driving piano perforations, crashing snares and resonant howls, Almendros, Drones.

The third offering is ‘Mojada’, taking cues from classic deep house with its deep-set bassline and modular squeaks. It’s a slow burner, an aquaplane on Eivissa, cueing 303 squelches and 90s drum machine riffing before its eventual, explosive peak.

After Mojada we enter the chugging, gritty realm of Das Komplex’s remixes. He refashions the heady throes of ‘Mojada’ into a driving, churning unit; percussions, distorted into infinity; basslines bent and buckled into submission; slabs of piano lathered with space echo delay. Wonky late-nite dancing music at its very best.

Extra treat: Das Komplex also left us his ‘Pineapple Bonus Mix’ of Mojada, which is a more sunset-suited affair altogether. This special mix lasers in on that exuberant piano part, then plays with percussions and dynamics to create a full-on dub version of the original track. An essential version from Das Komplex - digi only!

PREMIERE : Residentes Balearicos - Pitiusas First

Last time he brought his Emperor Machine project to Leng, via the seductive, call-to-the dancefloor that was ‘Dance Par Amour’, Andrew Meecham had vocalist Severine Mouletin in tow. On this welcome return to the label, Meecham has enlisted the help of another sublime singer: Bom Carrot 봄캐롯, lead vocalist with South Korean punk-pop outfit Tirikilatops.

Although the pair share a mutual friend, who had extolled the virtues of a potential collaboration to Meecham, it was only when Bom Carrot 봄캐롯 reached out on social media that the pair were finally connected. Meecham jumped at the opportunity to kick-start a collaboration, quickly firing over a track he’d been working on. A few months later, her vocals landed in his inbox and the rest is history.

The resultant track, ‘춤춰 Chumchwo – Let’s Dance’, may feature many of the aural trademarks of Meecham’s Emperor Machine work – spiraling analogue electronics, vintage synth sounds, effects aplenty and infectious grooves inspired by New York’s no-wave movement of the early 1980s – but is somehow even more thrillingly wild, excitable, and exhilarating than you’d reasonably expect.

A big part of that, of course, is the inspired contributions of Bom Carrot 봄캐롯. Her freewheeling vocals – part sung, part spoken, and part improvised – are energetic, distinctive, and addictive, adding layers of post-punk abandon and a genuine sense of musical freedom. Combined with Meecham’s outrageously unpredictable backing track – there are twists and turns aplenty, as well as surprising percussive and musical touches that seemingly appear and disappear at will – the resultant song is like the unlikely sonic lovechild of Talking Heads, Pierre Henry and K-Punk.

As you’d expect given his track record of delivering freewheeling instrumental reworks, the vocal version comes backed with an extra-special Emperor Machine ‘Instrumental Dub’ version. Stripped back and percussive, with dropouts and breakdowns aplenty, this is no mere vocal-free take, but rather a reconstructed revision piled high with extra percussion, spacey electronics, echoing vocal snippets, bubbly bass and razor-sharp Tom Tom Club guitar licks –all arranged to rise, fall and rise again around Meecham’s killer groove. As the track’s title suggests: “let’s dance!”
