Programme note
LIMIT was composed for two ensembles with whom I have long artistic relationships, Paramirabo from Montréal, and Hopper from Liège, and it was a great pleasure to be part of their joining forces for the first time. Looking at the instrumental forces of the commission, I saw a lot of potential for a noisy, distorted sound world - with electric guitar, synthesizer, and two clarinets, whose closed-tube construction emphasizes odd harmonics in the same way that distortion creates wave-folding. And so, built around the idea of distortion, square waves, and odd harmonics, I wrote the piece as an homage to two genres of music close to my heart: industrial music and musique concrète. The piece was premiered in Belgium, so I wanted to give a special nod to one of my favourite groups from there who ended their activity this year after more than 30 years: Front 242. The piece also gives nods and sometimes direct quotations from works by Einstürzende Neubauten, Depeche Mode, Nitzer Ebb, as well as Pièrre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry.
The piece was composed partly during a residency at the Centre Henri Pousseur in Liège, and I wish to thank Patrick Delges for his technical assistance during the residency and the production.

LIMIT - Paramirabo + Ensemble Hopper, François Deppe

"Orison" is a work for ondes Martenot and electronics commissioned and performed by Daniel Áñez. It was irresistible for me to associate this early electronic instrument with science fiction and the idea of extra-terrestrial life, and so the work takes on a quasi-narrative, atmospheric character addressing these themes and their relationship with spirituality, the idea of the metaphysical 'other,' and personal feelings of alienation and otherness. Besides being an incredible ondist, Daniel has a virtuosic fluency with synthesizers and effects pedals, and so the work incorporates a significant signal processing component, which Daniel implemented. The work also features a vocoder during a brief sung passage. The work premiered in 2024 at the Electric Eclectics festival in Meaford, ON, and this studio recording was realized by Daniel Áñez and James O'Callaghan in 2025.

him.saint (Christian Streit Smith, b. 1990) is a percussionist, producer, dj, & landscaper based in The Hague.  Christian grew up in Cincinnati, and has lived in Canada and Switzerland before moving to The Netherlands in 2016. He has been playing percussion since he was 10 years old, and while he was originally trained classically, he now works in the ever expanding field of experimental music.  Since 2020 he has self-released a solo full length album, a project with composer Jesse Broekman called 'Contrafacta' on Moon Villain, and next month he and his Basel based ensemble Gyre are releasing an album of music by Argentinian composer Santiago Diez Fischer on Another Timbre.  As a dj, the last years have seen several appearances on Maxi Radio in Leiden as well as making mixes for his soundcloud an average of once or twice per year, and in November he will begin a 4 show residency at Stranded FM in Utrecht called 'C. Smith's Midwest Meltdown' which will conclude in Summer 2026.  him.saint is his moniker chosen for all electronic dance music including techno, but the Stranded FM shows under his government name will be focused on presenting a wide range of his music taste outside of club and dance music culture. 

For my debut R&D mix I was really trying to compress the experience of a 3 hour set into 1 hour, and to lean into maintaining and building a continuous groove and energy for as long as possible before the final 15 minutes where it goes to some perhaps unexpected places. It was recorded in my apartment in March of 2025 using my computer, rekordbox software, and a ddj-400 controller.

C. Smith's Midwest Meltdown | November 22nd 2025 | Stranded FM

A mental sound map of the forests in Québec's Laurentians region, drawing on my accumulated memories of journeys through the area's landscapes. Here are a few things I can recall crossing my mind when making this music :

A vertical spectrum of green;
a fern-draped understory;
clouds of blackflies;
the song of a wood thrush;
a distant chainsaw;
a crumbling stone wall enclosing a nonexistent field;
my t-shirt sticking to my back;
the electric buzz of cicadas;
a rusted out pickup truck;
the drifting haze of a forest fire some miles north;
a sense of impending loss;
the scent of humus;
the scraping of raspberry thorns across my skin.

Architek Percussion is a Montreal-based quartet dedicated to the development and performance of avant-garde, experimental, minimalist, and electroacoustic music. Founded in early 2012, they have emerged as dynamic exponents of chamber music, equally comfortable in performing classic repertoire and exploring new terrain through premieres.

In addition to their self-produced concerts in Montreal, Architek has recently appeared as guests of Ottawa New Music Creators, Live@CIRMMT (Montreal), Innovations en Concert (Montreal), Matralab (Concordia University), Pointe-a-Calliere Museum (Montreal), the Schulich Year of Contemporary Music (McGill University), and the Cluster Festival (Winnipeg). In October 2013 they toured the Maritimes, performing and conducting workshops at several Universities in the region.

The members of Architek are ardent devotees of premiering new Canadian music, having recently done so with works by Adam Basanta, Eliot Britton, Beavan Flanagan, Nicole Lizée, Christos Hatzis, Nicolas Hyatt, and James O’Callaghan. Their current repertoire includes works for both pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments, and reflects the cultural and stylistic diversity of North American contemporary music.

Architek Percussion est un quatuor de percussion émergent concentré sur le développement et l'interprétation de la musique avant-garde, expérimentale, minimaliste et électro-acoustique, particulièrement dévoué à la création d'œuvres des compositeurs émergents. Avec une répertoire actuelle comprise d'une mélange d'œuvres écrites également pour les instruments à claviers et pour les instruments à peaux, Architek est capable de montrer la diversité culturelle et stylistique de la music contemporaine de l'Amérique du Nord. Le quatuor a été former à l'Université de McGIll en 2011, où les membres se sont rencontrer pendant leurs études de maîtrises sous la supervision d'Ayiun Huang et Fabrice Marandola.

Basé à Montréal, Architek présente une série de concerts annuelle, tout en restant fidèle aux communautés différentes de la ville avec ses présentations spéciales. En 2012/13 les membres ont présenté des concerts gratuits à McGill (Schulich Year of Contemporary Music), au Vieux Port (en collaboration avec La Musée Pointe-à-Calliere), Christchurch Cathedral (en collaboration avec Concerts Cathédrale Contemporaine), et à l'Université Concordia (Montréal/Nouvelles Musiques). A part des concerts présentés à Montréal, Architek a réalisé des concerts chez Gallery 345 à Toronto, et comme invités spécial à Ottawa avec le Ottawa Choral Society et Ottawa New Music Creators. La saison 2013/14 figurera la participation du quatuor chez le Cluster Festival à Winnipeg, LIve@CIRMMT à Montréal et une tournée des provinces maritimes du Canada.

Architek est fortement dévoué à la musique nouvelle et à la commissionnement de nouvelles pièces de plusieurs compositeurs canadiens où basé au Canada ; incluants Eliot Britton, Kota Nakamura, Beavan Flanagan, et Nicolas Hyatt, tandis que l'interprétation des œuvres des compositeurs canadiens Christos Hatzis, Claude Vivier et Sandeep Bhagwati. Ces pratiques à fait établir Architek comme une pièce importante dans la scène musicale montréalaise, ainsi que celle du Canada.
