Archival Feedback was invited by Public Hives to enhance the experience of its urban beekeeping mission that places beehives in neighborhoods and parks throughout Miami. When the mics were turned on, we listened deeply to the hives.

A Call to Bird (August 2018)

The Florida Grasshopper Sparrow is a federally endangered bird found nowhere else. These populations are in steep decline due in large part to their exclusive dependence on living in the dry prairie ecosystems of central and south Florida, more than 85% of which have been destroyed.

Our sparrow is named for one of its calls - a quiet buzz that sounds much like its namesake (tk, zzzziiir, pit-sip tzzzzzzzzzz)​, which differs from that of their now-extinct relative, the Dusky Seaside Sparrow (tsick, tsick, tsurrrrrrr, tip-tup-a-zeeeeeee) also once native to Florida. Male grasshopper sparrows sing only select months of the year during the nesting season, for a few hours each day. Intricately patterned, the birds are well-camouflaged within the remote grasslands in the peninsula’s interior, making them difficult to locate. In the spring, they nest on the ground, under palmettos or in shrubs, with females laying 3-5 eggs, and the young fledge within 9 to 10 days. The male sings from a low perch to defend territory - about the only time they are readily visible - and helps raise the young. Diet includes seeds and invertebrates. It is thought that most individuals live their entire lives within a few miles of their birth place.

A Call to Bird is an urgent call to listen to the songs of both sparrows, to exchange the experience. The track was composed in support of the Institute for Interspecies Art and Relations.

Archival Feedback’s working experimental practice integrates wide-ranging field studies with art and the study of the landscape, charting the environment, and exploring place through a holistic framework.  AF contextualizes the fieldwork through sound media and mediums, using these to create experiences that encounter and immerse into the acoustic landscape, relating the human spaces to non-human spaces and relationships in ecosystems in an anthropogenic era. We work imperatively towards using sound art to facilitate a more-heightened listening.

Archival Feedback (Emile Milgrim, T. Wheeler Castillo) are artists based in Miami, FL. The duo expands their range through collaboration with artists, musicians, and scientists, working with print-making, video, and installation.
