Augmented Gamelan at Union Chapel 30/06/12 Part 1

A quick recording of my current setup. All sound is generated in Max/MSP, with four channels out to transducers attached to bonang/pencon.  This recording is mostly acoustic -  I had set out to play around with the mic feed into the computer, but the output when I switched everything on was quite nice as it was.

Recorded at the Noize Party event in Sriwedari, Solo, Indonesia 14/06/14.  

This recording features a live instrumental/electroacoustic setup in development.  Several bonang pencon (small gamelan instruments) are stimulated with signals generated in Max/MSP along with feedback.  This was the first public performance and I was still getting to know the setup-due to a few technical problems the volume was much lower than intended.

Squarepusher - Wendorlan? (Ardisson 110 rework)

This set was recorded live in an empty swimming pool at the Albert, North West London, June 2013.  The performance took place as part of the No Dark Places festival.

Augmented Gamelan live (No Dark Places Festival 2013)

This piece uses a patch developed in Max/MSP to interpret the balungan (a central melodic pattern) in realtime.  The electronic parts are designed to complement the instrumental parts and played through the same instrument through transducers that effectively turn it into a set of metal speakers. Acid Mix 3 (Spring Acid, 2007)

Recorded at the Gathering of the Gamelans symposium at the University of York.  This was part of a lunchtime concert of experimental and improvised works for gamelan and electronics by Charles Matthews and Charlotte Pugh.  The full set will be uploaded to our other Soundcloud account shortly.

In this version of the traditional piece ketawang Subakastawa the kempyang and kethuk (in this case a pair of bonang pots with unrelated pitches) are played using transducers, essentially turning them into metal speakers.  The rhythms used are a play on the notations of irama and elaboration in Javanese music.

This is a rough demo I recorded to see how the differently-tuned instruments work together.  I'm not really a gender player.

This is will eventually sit with a couple of other parts including electronics and vocals (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86qUu_k5Gm8 ) - at the moment all parts multi-tracked by myself: traditional gender, soft/hard beaters on gender for kenong, kempul+ gong, slenthem, and electronic gongs.  Since the instruments come from different sets I am exploring different techniques to emphasise some of the beating tones that occur when they're played together.

The recording was made in several takes on a Zoom H2, bouncing back and forth on Ableton Live, so it's quite noisy.  The gongs are based on a couple of sine waves generated in Max/MSP

This week I have been experimenting with different synthesis techniques for Mipilan, my current project based around ideas from Javanese gamelan.  Please see the following link for more details and download of an older version:

In this demo I move between three patches.  These have been recorded separately but it is possible to run them in parallel from the same sequencing section.  All parts have been generated in real-time from a central melodic pattern (balungan).

0:00 - 4:30: a set of bandpass filters processing field recordings from Solo earlier this year

4:30 - 10:00: default output: samples of three gender-type instruments and additive wavetable synthesis, panning based on balungan notes

10:00 - 15:15: granular synthesis and convolution of water and plastic sounds

This was recorded on February 5th 2013 as part of a series of attempts to get back into solo instrumental/electronic improvisation, starting "from scratch" and building up tools in the course of performance.  

I used an empty Ableton Live set with a mic input, and dragged devices in as I went, assigning controls to the Lemur app running on the iPad.  For the most part I tried to ensure that all electronic sounds were generated from the mic input - i.e. no pre-synthesised or sampled sounds, with the exception of some FM pitch/filter modulation that kind of crosses over.  The radio is cheating a little bit in this respect as well, but I tried to treat it as a noise source for the most part.

Solo improvisation for gamelan and electronics, testing out a litle transducer/mixer setup for an Augmented Gamelan performance alongside other live instruments.

Here I'm running a network of sine oscillators through a couple of bonang and back into the desk via contact mics, playing with various delay-based effects and feedback.
