Number forty-five presented by a very good pal of mine and talented musician @djchrisellis. Chris' warm,  gentle and friendly aura as a person can really be felt in his musical leanings. The DJ and producer has contributed to series’ like Public Possession, Hope St Radio, Friendly Potential, Primer and Head Rush, spanning between house, electronic, Balearic, dub and IDM.  

Chris' productions are perfectly balanced --  groovy electronic dance music, but still maintaining a feeling of warmth and authenticity.  Beyond covid-lockdowns you can catch him play his playful live set, and he's also got a four track EP coming out on @publicpossession early next year.

Richmond-based veteran DJ Aakmael was born to a trombonist father and a singer mother, which inevitably led him grow up in a jazz-and-funk-led environment. At the age of 16, he got his start behind the decks, playing everything from hip-hop and RnB to jazz and reggae at house parties and school jams, before getting into house thanks to Inner City's huge tune 'Big Fun'. On a mission to steadily educate the ears of his audience, he could have easily been part of those Founding Fathers of House who have devoted their life to producing and curating some of the best house vibes to date. Aak is mainly known for producing underground hard-hitting deep and raw house, assuredly filled with a touch of melancholy and nostalgia. Today, he no longer has anything to prove as his track record is as long as your arm; he first started to release records in the early 2000s on top dance labels like Note Grooves or Axe on Wax, before creating his own imprint UnXpozd Entertainment. Besides, he has been regularly gracing worldwide dance floors such as ://about:blank (Berlin), Fáklya Klub (Budapest) or Output (NY) alongside house geniuses including Patrice Scott or Kai Alcé.

Living up to his reputation, Aak has been extremely picky when putting his tracks together for this mix in order to uphold his standards. Today, he is delivering mellow but serious house grooves from Demuir, Local Options or Satoshi Tomiie. This could definitely be your new summer chill soundtrack!

BSRMIX #116 - Sean La'Brooy

A one off mix compiled by Kiernan Abbott, comprising of the lesser played folk / pop tracks performed in sessions and released on independent or private labels throughout the 1970-1990s in Wales. 

Welsh folk music has always been a major collectors item, with many looking to Sain or Welsh greats like Tecwyn Ifan, Sidan or Endaf Emlyn. This mix focuses on the music made in bedrooms, garages and on radio sessions should they be lucky enough to salvage the recordings. It's in our nature as Welsh people to be the 'outsider' given our minority, and geographical or historic relationship with England. 

This mix is to celebrate the musicians and artists that crafted their own sound, using the passion and can do attitude that was required to bring their music to life.

MFM: Hi Judith, welcome to the series. How is your day so far? How do you normally start your day?

SJ: Good! The sun is shining, its summer and I am exited about the Mix. Thank you for inviting me to do this! I normally start my day with a rap and a spicy spring roll. After that I head straight into a whistle battle with the birds, if I have enough discipline I do a Spanish crossword , some exercise on my plastic carpet, then water the flowers and preparation of my breakfast. 

MFM: This pandemic came by surprise for most of us, leaving many uncertainties for the future. You seem like a spiritually grounded and calm person. How did you cope with this new and unexpected situation?  

SJ: It was a challenge, but also a gift to be more present in the moment, to take it slow and take it day by day. To trust and not worry. Deal with the fears, the issues, the old patterns as an individual, within your close circle, within your surrounding, in the society, in the global happenings and the virtual reality. A chance to feel, reflect, be quiet, disconnect, reconnect, observe, give thanks, change, adapt, envision new perspectives and infinite possibilities. 

MFM: Do you manage to still focus on music and art, whether it being in a different way maybe? What are you working on these days? 

SJ: I focus on music and art everyday - its everywhere and I can’t imagine life without it. I had a bicycle accident at the end of April and was forced keep still until the beginning of June. I had to rest a lot, which is not the easiest thing for me. After I was less tired I was reading a lot, getting inspiration, doing research. Writing down ideas, thoughts, that nurture the process of creating textile creations, audio journeys and ideas for the future. I am working on different textile pieces. I’ve listened to a lot of records and researched for new music online. Just did five exclusive Mixes for the National Radio, which was the fist time ever and meant a lot to me.

MFM: Have you found comfort in making mixes, especially since dance floors got locked? Is it an important outlet for you? 

SJ: Its my passion and craft to find music that moves me and create an uplifting, imagination triggering, inspiring and reinforcing audio journey that I like to listen again and again. There’s usually plenty of messages in my mixes. They have a either a theme or a title. It starts with something on my mind that I want to share with the world. A story I want to tell. A message that I want to spread. Or then this specific mix I want to be able to listen: A tape to put into the walkman and head off to an adventure! The kitchen tape for my mother to chop and wiggle. The perfect mix for the perfect situation. I always loved that. Since its summer I wanted this mix to be a dreamy, lush and hazy journey with an ultimate summer feeling to it. 

MFM: Any suggestions for how, where and when to listen to it best? 

SJ: On a sweet summer morning, on a hot summer day, on a lush summer evening. In a room with open windows and a good sound system drinking an ice-cold lemonade with big ice cubes,  meditating, origami folding, doing a tropical island puzzle, drawing, writing a poem or a letter, free dance improvisations… On your favorite headphones outside: laying on the gras in the sun, bouncing in a hammock, relaxing by the river or the sea, eating a coconut raspberry ginger ice cream, driving through the countryside, going on a long walk with a big hat… In general: Any time you need a hug, clear the head, come down & get reenergized.

MFM Mix 018: Sassy J

Hailing via Ontario (CA), Brandon co-founded the famous "inivisible City" Record Shop in Toronto which has since then released some important re-issues on the self-owned label and generally become a haven for the local record-digging scene. 

Around 2016/ 2017, however, Brandon has parted with Invisible City and it certainly did not take him long to establish his own fantastic label "Séance Centre" which does not solely focus on the music  but instead situates its releases in their individual cultural and physical environments via visual modalities like photos and documentary but also word-based comunication such as interviews, essays or storytelling.

It was immediately clear to us that his approach fits perfectly with 5918mins. and so we are glad that Brandon has contributed this summer special full of goodness, seamlessly meandering between more experimental and pleasing sounds. Perfect for the current heat wave.
