On February 6th, two earthquakes took the lives of over 40,000 and counting Turkish, Syrian and Kurdish people, and displaced millions more, in what is one of the most devastating natural disasters of the 21st century. The effects of this disaster will be felt for years to come, and we as an international community need to raise money however we can to help, and also need to keep the crisis visible in global news.

On Sunday, February 19th, we hosted a fundraiser event at arkaoda Berlin, in collaboration with Root Radio, Radio Alhara and Resident Advisor. It was be a chance for people from the affected communities to meet and mourn together, to listen to some DJs from these regions play downtempo sets, to buy some donated artworks and crafts and, most importantly, to raise money. 

Together, we raised 12,000€ which was split equally between three reliable organisations: AHBAP who focus on Turkey, The White Helmets focusing on Syria and Heyva Sor focusing on Kurdish people.

During this Summer's sonic-seance at our Lisbon home, Planeta Manas, we revisited the history of seances, and with both a critical and curious eye, researched the technologies and beliefs behind these sessions attempting to communicate with the spirits. We sat and laid down together, guided by the live guitar drones of local musician, BLEID, who conjured ghastly shadows into our presence - including a police raid who invaded the space during her live set - and yet, her precise sonic guidance appeased the spirits and maintained everyone tight through a soporific night journey.

Combining traditional instrumentation and drone synths, BLEID creates endless waves, slowly growing and decreasing in a timeless continuum, overlaying sounds to breaking point, collapsing into themselves just to arrive at a familiar yet new destination every time.

We recommend good speakers that allow the reverberation to be felt in your body, or headphones accompanied with some tea. Allow yourself to drift away with these textured, haunted but soothing vibrations.

Starting out as a DJ in 1994, @dexter-lux is well-seasoned when it comes to the craft of selecting music and setting a scene. Aside from playing and collecting music, Dexter is also the booker of the club Lux Frágil in Lisbon; a well-known, beloved spot for international artists and DJs. His mix is a three-hour-long voyage into various styles, rhythms and emotions: according to Dexter, it is inspired by “…the essence of my unforgettable and intense summer, a collection of memories from the deep, endless nights, the profound emotions of those early stirring mornings, the awe-inspiring sunrises, with a touch of autumn's wistful nostalgia and winter blues…” Enjoy!
