Jacob Meehan's set at Lecken was the talk of the Play Pit. The WHOLE Ambient stage curator and Kwia mainstay shared a more intimate side of his collection with us. Dubbed out electronica merge with smooth throwbacks while ethereal jazz gets sprinkled with 80s synths, making us nostalgic for the age of our lost innocence. We swayed and swooned down memory lane, counting our blessings beneath the inverted crosses of the Play Pit sky, only to emerge again in the warm embrace of trusted friends or strangers, all within the breadth of @jacob-meehan's expertly concocted seance. Here you can finally revisit a slice of our upside down heaven recorded at Lecken Unholy on Easter Friday 2025 at Kreuzwerk.

This whole piece is a kind of sonic collage—an aural journal composed of several pieces that emerged from simple ideas, specific moods, or intuitive emotional states. Each composition is less a “track” or “song” and more of a soundscape or atmosphere—like scores for imaginary films or the background music of unwritten novels.

The process behind these pieces was entirely organic. None of them were forced into being; they evolved naturally, shaped only by their own needs and direction. This approach marks a personal shift—a quieter, more intuitive way of connecting with sound. It’s in contrast to the pressure I’ve been feeling lately while working on structured electronic dance music under tight timelines and expectations.

These compositions exist outside of the grid—untethered from conventional time signatures, rhythm patterns, or defined scales. They resist categorization, and that’s precisely the point. They reflect a moment of letting go.

The set was created mostly in my home studio, using Ableton Live on my laptop. All of the sounds were synthesized from scratch—through different methods of sound design. I didn’t use any samples. Instead, I made a conscious choice to keep the sound palette intentionally simple, while embedding complexity in how the notes were drawn and the MIDI structures were shaped. This allowed the pieces to move fluidly, detached from strict grids or quantization, yet still deeply intentional in their phrasing and evolution.

2025 A Rish Called Wanda

It is not easy to find Saphira, and it is even harder to leave. If it so chooses, the city will appear first as a quivering mirage on the horizon, second as a blinding stone mirror, and third as a sprawling maze whose sounds and sensations embrace the traveler in a slow and languid frenzy. Quite famously, it is home to countless locked eyes and spellbound hearts. It is a place whose deep currents of longing, like the sound of its ocean shore, seem to rumble and hiss under the surface of every word and gesture, in every bead of sweat that blooms from the glimmering skin of its people.

Saphira is at all times caught between a low-lying sun to the west and a glowing moon to the east. They hang above the skyline with an eerie stillness, watching the city’s tireless creatures writhe together in tenderness and sin, casting upon them a pale, silvery gold light that hangs heavy in the humid air. It is in the tension of this peculiar light and its slender, tangled shadows that Saphira’s longing grows dense and time thickens within its walls. Traveler and resident alike are suspended in an endless eros, caught tightly between pain and pleasure, between the sting of saltwater in one’s eyes and the sticky sweetness of ripe fruit on one’s lips. 

Perhaps this is why Saphira’s radios and televisions stutter with phrases and images so ghostly yet so intimately familiar, why its dusty buildings seem always to crumble so gloriously yet never collapse, why around every corner there is a street that so closely resembles one of a distant and loving memory, and why the curling flakes of paint on its walls and facades will reach out against the heat without fading or falling. It is a city inside of want and outside of time.

Topic and Guest: Since war broke out on April 15, 2023 in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo a.k.a. Hemedti over 13 million people have been displaced—internally and externally as refugees abroad; tens of thousands have been killed; and over 20 million people (about half of the population) face acute food insecurity.  The show features yesterday's (July 29, 2025) conversation on the situation in Sudan with Mosaab Baba, of Ayin Network–a media outlet in Sudan. The conversation unpacks and contextualizes the conflict in its current state; the internal and external players; regional dynamics; and scheduled peace talks in the U.S. of today July 30.

how to conceive of the club as a vulnerable space? just by having a body with all kinds of orifices i am vulnerable. there is no clear inside and outside, only infinitely intricate surfaces. i open myself up to the vibrations, my pupils are dilated. how safe is this space? a temporary autonomous zone. i have not read anything about it but these three words resonate with me. all kinds of things resonate within me. an amalgam of past processes and future potentials. this is never complete, it is something that has to be reiterated time and again. not a repetition but a return. i recognize some of these tropes. of course. either i have to appreciate it without the need to absorb it all in me or i have to lose myself so that there is no me to absorb stuff in in the first place. i hope the turntable is not resonating with the subwoofer. i am resonating with the subwoofer. if any of this resonates with you then book me for your club or for your ego death.
