Ammo bunker explosion (23/04/1958) -- Republican Government of Juscelino Kubitschek

On April 23, 1958, there were explosions in the storerooms of the Central Depot of Armaments and Ammunition of the Army, located in Deodoro, district of the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Deodoro´s ammo bunker represented the largest ammunition depot in South America.

In an act of heroism, the captain of cavalry, Odilton Medrado Castello Branco, together with 3 other officers, adapted the cannon of a 35 ton General Grant tank with a hose and threw water toward the explosions flooding the surrounding bunkers to avoid the explosion of other depots. The cavalry troops did not disband, but were in charge of monitoring approximately 1,200 regiment horses.

The displacement of air produced by repeated bursts of grenades had an impact on many neighborhoods, even the more distant ones, such as Leblon and Copacabana. In Grajaú and Vila Isabel there were cracks in the plaster walls of several houses, and many windows were broken. The neighborhoods around the Deodoro Depot had smashed walls, windows shattered and roofs destroyed. Many wrecks were scattered around Bandeiras avenue.

There were reports that the explosions were caused by acts of a sorcerer's ritual, "macumba", which caused fire to spread rapidly through dry grass entering the region of bunkers, causing even his death.

Explosões nos paióis do Depósito Central de Armamento e Munição do Exército, situado em Deodoro, bairro da Zona Oeste do Rio de Janeiro, em 23 de abril de 1958. Os paióis de Deodoro representavam o maior depósito de munições da américa do sul.
Cel. Odilton Medrado Castello Branco, com um tanque General Grant, 35 toneladas, adaptado com canhão d´água com mangueiras emendadas do corpo de bombeiros enfrentou as explosões inundando os paióis do entorno para não explodirem, junto com mais 3 oficiais, em ato de heroísmo. As tropas da cavalaria não debandaram, sendo encarregadas de controlar os cerca de 1.200 cavalos do regimento.
Os deslocamentos de ar produzidos pelos repetidos estouros das granadas tiveram reflexos em muitos bairros, mesmo os mais distantes, como Leblon e Copacabana. No Grajaú e em Vila Isabel ocorreram rachaduras no reboco das paredes de diversas casas, e muitas vidraças foram quebradas. Os bairros limítrofes a Deodoro tinham aspecto de cidades bombardeadas: paredes arrebentadas, vidraças estraçalhadas, telhados destruídos. Muitos destroços ficaram espalhados pela Avenida das Bandeiras.
Há relatos de que as explosões foram causadas por atos de um feiticeiro, cujo ritual, uma macumba, espalhou fogo pelo mato seco e adentrou a região dos paióis, causando, inclusive, sua morte.
