The Danish Radio Big Band was established in 1964, at a time when the Copenhagen jazz venues were teeming with life and the city was constantly visited by big names from the USA. In the early years the band, which was originally called The New Radio Dance Orchestra, was conducted by Ib Glindemann. But over the subsequent decades many new jazz names came along - a series of striking conductors, musicians and guest soloists - all of whom helped to develop the band into the experienced ensemble that was followed with keen attention over large parts of the world on recordings and in concerts. Conductors like Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and Jim McNeely and guest soloists like Miles Davis, Stan Getz and Joe Henderson were able - along with a string of Danish jazz musicians - to make the Danish Radio Big Band the institution that Ernie Wilkins called "probably the best band in Europe."
