Dreamy dramaturgy and the atmospheric sound of his collection of wax. Menzel Washington(@menzelwashington) as he’s known in Berlin, is a record collector, and passionate about the art of mixing. He’s part of Nihil, an underground collective of party makers in Berlin (literally just for fun), and Heische.   

We know Menzel by his characteristic minimal and tech-house sound, but this special time he spices the mix with acid groove, sexy vocals, hypnotic tunes, and the rhythm of a summer dance floor afternoon deliciously mixed. Yummy!

Our man in Detroit is one of electronic music’s unsung heroes. With a solid claim to have been one of the true originators present at the birth of DJ culture in Detroit, Delano has persevered to play a big part in today’s cutting edge underground scene. He had dealt with more than most in 2020/21. While European artists could count on some support from Governments many of our musical family in the US had to find other ways to survive. Delano gave us a unique, honest insight into this and more. We never need a chance to share our favourite tracks from Delano, so it was a challenge to limit ourselves to just some of his back catalogue for this recording, we hope we didn’t miss your favourite.

This hybrid DJ / Live Set was recorded in a yurt structure at the Freerotation Festival in Wales. This time my idea for the set was to take us all much further out, much deeper inside than the set from last year. A more disembodied experience. 

As I had done last year, I sat on the floor in front of the speakers to perform instead of behind them as a DJ normally does. This greatly enhanced my feeling of experiencing the set with the audience, dissolving the usual performer / audience divide. 
Below is the list of tracks that I played in addition to live improvisation using a eurorack modular system.

Ganz ruhige Töne kommen heute aus dem schönen Basel. Thom Monn ist ein alter Hase in der Basler Elektro-Szene und ein ganz besonderer Sound-Fetischist. Seine Sets erzeugen immer diese ganz besondere Stimmung denen man sich einfach nicht entziehen kann. Vor allem zwei Königsklassen der elektronischen Musik beherrscht er wie kein anderer --- zum einen ist er einer der besten Warm-Up DJs (hier sei sein Set „Warmup For Marek Hemmann“ erwähnt) und zum anderem ist er ein Virtuose der Ambient-Musik. Seine Ambient-Sets berühren die Seele, sind dann auch gerne mal melancholisch aber doch bleibt immer eine gewisse Zuversicht und Liebe zurück.

Thom vielen Dank, das du dir trotz dieses für dich so schweren 2016, die Zeit genommen hast uns so eine schöne Auszeit von der Realität zu zaubern.

Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul

Arnaud has been active in electronic music since quite a few years. In 2008 he started Input Selector, one of the first french blog that talked about techno and house, and had his first vinyl release on Tablon Records in 2012. He's been steadily refining his sets in places such as Freerotation, La Machine du Moulin Rouge, Concrete or Vienna's Pratersauna along inspiring artists such as Margaret Dygas, Cio d'Or and Donato Dozzy.
