Liquid Crystal  -   Musical Variations for organ

I’ve got to say — I’m excited! I know this one’s special.
It all started more than 200 years ago, as a simple sketch… and now, after a deep dive and a few conversations with my virtual mentor, I’ve orchestrated it into a Wind Quintet. And fittingly, in the spirit of Halloween, it turned out a bit weird — in the best possible way!
The more I study chromatic harmony from the great Romantic composers, the more I feel I’m in dialogue (and sometimes a bit of a wrestling match!) with Ludwig van Beethoven himself. I often wonder: What would Beethoven have done if he’d been commissioned to write a Wind Quintet?
As it happens, wind quintets weren’t very common in the late 1800s. Beethoven actually wrote only one — in the classic key of E-flat Major.
In my film scoring classes, we learned the importance of giving each instrument space to shine in its register — and I’ve really leaned into that here. I also experimented with blending instruments that complement each other beautifully. Listen for that ping-ponging call and response throughout — it’s one of my favorite parts!
This piece is now ready to go and will be performed LIVE with real studio musicians on November 10th. I couldn’t be more grateful or more excited to share it with you all.

I was born in Leicester in the late 1950's. Since semi-retirement and subsequent retirement (as a Dermatologist and formerly G.P) I have spent some of my spare time trying to learn music theory. I also enjoy long distance running as well as cycling, skiing and tennis. I enjoy cooking, gardening and growing a few vegetables. And fine wine (in moderation). I enjoy insect photography, with a particular interest in hoverflies..
To my regret I never learnt a musical instrument when younger but I have listened to and been fascinated by music for as long as I can remember. The advent of the computer age has allowed me to pursue my desire to compose music. I use Logic Pro X software (and MuseScore3 for recent piano compositions). My compositions reflect my varied listening preferences (including Contemporary Classical, Jazz and  Music from other cultures around the world).
