There's good, and then there's great. And then there's essential. Steve Bug and his Poker Flat label, which is over fifteen years old now, are perennials in house and techno. Bug, German by birth, attained this canonical status through the sheer will of groove and melody, and his debut MIXED BY makes it look easy.

"We never want to go with the next big thing. We don't want to try to impress people with the newest artists who are super-hyped," Bug told THUMP last year. "We'd rather release music that has a timeless feel to it, rather than whatever is hip right now."

Lucky for Bug, house and techno are probably more hip than they've ever been, and his academic understanding of the history of club culture gushes from the speakers with every kick.

The mix features Poker Flat artists like Tim Engelhardt, Joeski, and Bug himself, before dropping cuts from Seth Troxler, Ten Ven, and Poker Flat alumni Josh Wink. With thirteen tracks in one hour, it shows you don't need to set off fireworks every minute to keep the crowd moving.

"I want to make people happy with the music that I like," says Bug. "I'd rather drown in my own sound than survive by doing something I don't really feel."

Dexter is one of electro’s most important figures. The Dutchman has been a key part of the scene for nearly twenty years, both with his own solo works, but also in collaboration with the likes of Steffi.  Together the pair run their own Klakson label, a small but well formed outlet that constantly invigorates the genre. As a performer he is famously adroit in the live arena, but also does magical things with records across multiple decks. His roots as a breakdancer mean he is a slave to a powerful rhythm, and that shows in this new mix he has put together. 

Though it lasts only an hour, Dexter packs so much you feel you have been riding his grooves for much longer: there are plenty of slithering analogue lines and sci-fi melodies, but also much more raw and rugged drum patterns that encourage you to jerk your body as the tempo moves from 120 up to 135bpm at the hands of tracks from labels like Klakson, Viewlexx, Fragile and Apron. Never settling in one place for too long, you’ll find yourself lost in acid, then catching a breath in a more serene synth workout then ducking and diving below a volley of percussion before you can even say ‘hell yeah!’

As a true believer in the power of hardware samplers and analogue synthesizers, Italo Brutalo created his own universe of soundscapes and styles of music. Due to lots of releases on labels like Mozzarella Rec, Days of Being Wild, Compuphonic, RFR Records or International Deejay Gigolo Records, he made himself a very good name amongst artists from all different genres and decades. His records are supported by credible and popular acts as well.

Not just his outstanding DJ mixing skills but also his spectacular live acts opened the door for many bookings all over the world in countries like Spain, France, Mexico, Finland, Italy, Lithuania, Hungary, Austria, etc. to name just a few.

Soma proudly present a label debut from one of electronic music’s most influential figures, Keith Tucker aka Optic Nerve. With a detailed discography on some of Techno & Electro’s most well respected labels, stretching back to the 80s & 90s either via solo projects or as part of genre defining group AUX 88, Tucker has been at the forefront of the Detroit scene since his beginnings. Considered by many to be the blueprint for modern day Techno/Electro Tucker is one of the scene’s most hard working artists devoting almost 30 years to his career as an electronic artist. 

Appearing on Soma sub label, Avoidant, at the end of 2020 as DJ K-1, the opportunity to continue working together with his Optic Nerve pseudonym arose. Resulting in Soma’s 600th release, the Far Away EP. Combined with Scottish based artist Kyle Irvine’s unique Sci-Fi based artwork, Tucker has delivered a unique and modern day outlook on his famed Detroit Techno/Electro sound. 

Title track Far Away is a classic take on the seminal Detroit sound. Distant and drifting vocals glide across sweeping textures and tripped out synth sequences, glued together by deep emotive strings. Channel Z captures the classic Optic Nerve sound perfectly; pure machine funk soaked in harmonic atmospheres. The ominous Techno Programming has a darker, edgier tone to the previous tracks but by no means less emotive. A funked up, warped baseline sets the tone backed by jacked up drums as the track exudes pure attitude. Fellow Detroit based artist Strand drops a remix of Techno Programming to close out the EP. Their version leans on more melancholic elements but retains the feel and demeanour of the original.

Arnaud Rebotini is a singer, songwriter, producer and remixer, he has become one of the most emblematic figures in electronic music today, adept at straddling genres, both avant-garde and timeless, and bringing them together. 
For example, his Zend Avesta project (Organique, Universal 2000) married electronic music with a chamber orchestra. 
With his analogue synthesisers, he became a central figure on the scene of new international techno, marking renewed enthusiasm for the use of electronic instruments rather than just computers. His live shows have always been unanimously celebrated (Music Components, Citizen 2008, Someone Give Me Religion, K7 - 2010) and his remixes for pour Depeche Mode, David Guetta, Rammstein, The Rapture, Bloc Party, Acid Washed and Tristesse Contemporaine are as indicative of his sets at the biggest clubs and festivals (playing live or mixing) as his collaboration with the highbrow Groupe de Recherches Musicales, especially with Christian Zanési for their Frontières project.
