Meet JODA: a fresh musical pairing with shared DNA. 

Jono Grant and Darren Tate have history. Both together and apart, they have been there, done that and bought the vintage synth gear to celebrate.

Grant is one-third of Above & Beyond who, over the course of a two-decade career, have established themselves as one of the biggest electronic groups in the world. Eight studio albums (including one as vocal trance group OceanLab and two acoustic reworks), 17 compilation albums, a film score and nearing 100 singles speak to an output as varied as it is prodigious. Their label Anjunabeats is home to a bustling community of artists with over twenty years of catalogue.

As a classically trained musician, songwriter, producer and hitmaker, Tate is an OG Top of the Pops-botherer. In the early Noughties, at the outset of his career, he appeared on the show three times, once with Angelic, his collaboration with Judge Jules and the latter’s wife, performing classic trance banger It’s My Turn, then twice under the name Jurgen Vries. The following years saw more musical adventures, more Top 40 UK hits (12 in total) and more pseudonyms, including the trance-facing DT8 Project.

In 2003, the pair managed to sync their schedules to work on a couple of tracks, 'Let The Light Shine In' and 'Nocturnal Creatures'. Clearly, there was chemistry here. But as the pair’s respective careers subsequently took them off round the world in opposite directions, reconnecting other than fleetingly was never easy.

Then in 2019 Tate returned to his trance roots and signed to Anjunabeats for his DT8 Project releases. Around the same time, Above & Beyond received an offer to score an environmental documentary, 'The Last Glaciers'.

“I'm musical, but I've never done a score before, which would be quite an undertaking. And I knew Darren was massively experienced at doing that, and I've always admired what he does in his film work. So my first thought was: why don't we do it with Darren?” 

Jono and Darren got stuck into composing together, and it became a dream project all round ­– not least because it sparked further ideas. So, JODA was born. Working in Tate’s studio in suburban north London, and A&B’s south London HQ, the pair were in a creative bubble during the early days of the pandemic. And the partnership proved fruitful.

It was as if this pair of young-minded veterans were finding themselves all over again. Aptly enough, that fed into 'We Find Ourselves', featuring Grant's own vocals.

“Darren had the idea of using the ARP Odyssey for the bass sound,” explains Grant, “and it sounds very retro. We were listening to stuff like the Drive soundtrack by Kavinsky. So the tempo of the track actually comes from that style of music. We wouldn't have ended up at 110 BPM if it wasn't for listening to that kind of music."

In 2021, GRAMMY-nominated dance trio Above & Beyond kicked off the 10th-anniversary celebrations of their critically-acclaimed second studio album, ‘Group Therapy.’ To mark the occasion, an eclectic selection of acts took on the challenge of remixing ten iconic tracks from the 2011 album. The first part of this cross-genre remix compilation included reworks from ilan Bluestone, Oliver Heldens, Spencer Brown, CRi, Kasablanca, Manila Killa and more.
For part two of the ‘10 Years of Group Therapy’ celebrations, twelve more remixers have stepped up to the plate, including Maor Levi, William Orbit, Fehrplay, Nourey, Etherwood and more. The package also includes Sunny Lax’s mix of ‘Sun In Your Eyes’, the closing track on Anjunabeats Volume 15, and Blastoyz’ psy-trance remix of ‘Sun & Moon’, played by Above & Beyond in their Group Therapy 400 celebrations.

Alongside these digital remix albums, Anjunabeats is releasing a limited-edition ‘10 Years of Group Therapy: The Singles Collection’ vinyl box set, which sees six iconic singles from the album released on vinyl for the first time: ‘Sun & Moon’ feat. Richard Bedford, ‘Thing Called Love’ feat. Richard Bedford, ‘Love Is Not Enough’ feat. Zoë Johnston, ‘On My Way To Heaven’ feat. Richard Bedford, ‘Sun In Your Eyes,’ and ‘Prelude’ are included in the box, alongside B-side remixes from ilan Bluestone, Oliver Heldens, Hybrid Minds, Seven Lions, and William Orbit. The vinyl box set also includes a special ‘10 Years of Group Therapy’ slipmat as well as 12"x12" matte-finish prints of each single artwork. Above & Beyond close out the year with a long-awaited remix of ‘Chains’ from one of Anjunabeats' earliest signings, Maor Levi. 

'Chains' was Above & Beyond's second single of 2022 with singer Marty Longstaff, following the release of jubilant vocal ballad 'Gratitude'. Maor Levi’s remix first started appearing in Above & Beyond’s live sets last year, and has remained a staple in the band’s sets throughout the past year, including their sold out Group Therapy 500 celebrations at Banc of California Stadium, Los Angeles, as well as Tomorrowland and EDC Orlando.

Maor has been a semi-regular contributor to Anjunabeats since 2006, and in that time he has helped to define the modern sound of the label. Maor first signed to Anjunadeep at the age of 15 with 'Lital', before jumping across to Anjunabeats. He's since produced a continuous stream of club hits for the label including classics like ‘Reflect’, ‘Shapes’ and ‘Won’t Say No’.

Also performing as The Lake Poets, Marty Longstaff rose to prominence with the moving acoustic ballad ‘Shipyards’. The song accompanies the opening credits to the sleeper hit Netflix documentary, ’Sunderland ’Till I Die’. The Sunderland born singer-songwriter is also the voice of Above & Beyond's 'Tightrope', 'Flying By Candlelight’ and 'Gratitude'.

Oliver Smith, Above & Beyond’s first signing to Anjunabeats, steps up to remix Above & Beyond’s biggest hit of 2022, ‘Gratitude’.

Oliver’s remix of ‘Gratitude’ made its first appearance on the Anjunabeats Volume 16 compilation this past summer. Since then it has remained a staple in Above & Beyond’s live sets, including their sold out Group Therapy 500 celebrations at Banc of California Stadium, Los Angeles, as well as Tomorrowland and EDC Orlando.

Oliver Smith is a part of the furniture at Anjunabeats. From his university days with Jono and Paavo, to becoming the first signing to Anjunabeats, to featuring on every single Above & Beyond ‘'Volume' compilation, to the release of his own mix album, Anjunabeats Worldwide 08 in 2018, Oliver Smith is one of the label’s most consistent and innovative artists. 

Responsible for countless catalogue classics including ‘White’, ‘Northern Lights’ and ‘Pressure’, his records have been on high rotation on Group Therapy Radio and in Above & Beyond’s live sets for the past 20 years. 

Debuted during Above & Beyond's sold-out London festival at The Drumsheds in 2021, 'Gratitude' is both a jubilant vocal ballad and a tough, dancefloor filler. Over the past year, the significance of this record to the group's dedicated fan community was immediately apparent. It has cemented itself as a future classic for Jono, Tony and Paavo, standing alongside some of their best-loved anthems like 'You Got To Go' and 'Thing Called Love'.

Drawing inspiration from all areas of contemporary electronic music, ‘Tranquillity Base Vol. 1’ features five tracks debuted in front of 25,000 fans in Los Angeles last October; ranging from the rolling grooves of ‘Spin Off’, to the darker atmospheric techno of ‘VLEKNO’.
 
The name of the EP series references A&B’s beloved Tranquility Base alias, which was revered for its contribution to the trance genre, including iconic records such as ‘Surrender’, ‘Oceanic’ and ‘Razorfish’. The ‘Tranquility Base EP’ series showcases the current instrumental records firmly lodged in Jono, Paavo and Tony’s record boxes. 

“In the same way the quieter moments on our albums have always been a major part of Above & Beyond, the bigger dancefloor moments have also been a hallmark of our sound” says the trio.

OceanLab is the chart-hitting side project of Above & Beyond (Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamaki) and singer-songwriter Justine Suissa.

OceanLab released their romantic vocal trance single ‘Beautiful Together’ in 2003. Featuring the ethereal vocals of Justine Suissa atop Above & Beyond’s balearic-tinged soundscapes, it would go on to burn the hearts of millions of OceanLab fans in the years to come. Now, techno powerhouse and Anjunabeats stalwart Damion 'Damo' Houchen, a.k.a. The past two years have seen Genix release his debut album '199X', close Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy Weekender at The Gorge Amphitheatre, launch his club-oriented ‘Warehouse55’ EP series and event brand, and sell out two headline Warehouse 55 events in London and Los Angeles. A return to the club music that made him an in-demand DJ, 'Warehouse55' embraces the harder side of Damo’s sound. 

Released last summer, Genix’s debut Warehouse55 EP gained support from Joris Voorn, who spun 'Ba55 I5land' in his headline set at Awakenings Amsterdam on New Year’s Eve, as well as Marco Carola, Maceo Plex, Chris Lake, Joseph Capriati, Richie Hawtin, John Digweed, Sam Paganini, and beyond. 

‘Beautiful Together’ (Genix Remix) is the second single from the forthcoming ‘OceanLab: The Anthology’ project, which celebrates the legacy of the iconic trance group through a series of new remixes, a digital compilation, and a limited edition vinyl box set product.

This year, Above & Beyond were the only British DJs to sell out two consecutive nights at Printworks as part of the iconic London venue’s closing season. They recently made a return to Red Rocks Amphitheatre to helm two shows alongside label stars from Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep, and made an appearance at Insomniac's Escape Halloween festival in California.

The trio’s recent single, ‘Over Now’ with Seven Lions and Opposite The Other, amassed over 780K streams in its first week of release and earned spins on Sirius XM BPM, A State of Armin, iHeart Evolution radio and over 600 local stations worldwide.

Since he first emerged on the electronic music scene in the mid-2010s, Marsh has sculpted a uniquely soulful sound that has captivated his listeners and earned him a fast-growing and intensely devoted fanbase.

Released in early 2023, Marsh’s album 'Endless' follows two previous bodies of work; his 2017 debut 'Life On The Shore', and his critically acclaimed Anjunadeep debut LP, 'Lailonie', the latter of which has accumulated over 20 million streams to date, and sold over 1500 vinyl copies. Marsh also has an array of widely supported anthems in his discography. 'Come Together' (with Nox Vahn), 'Little Darling' and the Beatport chart-topping 'Lost In You' are some of his best-loved tracks, all streaming well into the millions and winning support from electronic music's most prominent artists, including Joris Voorn, Pete Tong, Diplo, and RÜFÜS DU SOL.

‘Sirens Of The Sea’ (Marsh Remix) is the latest single from the forthcoming ‘OceanLab: The Anthology’ project, which celebrates the legacy of the iconic trance group through a series of new remixes, a digital compilation, and a limited edition vinyl box set product.

I remember asking a number of friends to see which track they thought I should take on, but I think I already had the answer deep down - it had to be ‘Sirens Of The Sea’ - one of my all-time favorite trance anthems. In 2023, Above & Beyond were the only British DJs to sell out two consecutive nights at Printworks as part of the iconic London venue’s closing season. They recently made a return to Red Rocks Amphitheatre to helm two shows alongside label stars from Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep and made an appearance at Insomniac's Escape Halloween festival in California.
