Hailing from the Detroit Jazz scene, trumpeter Donald Byrd &  baritonist Pepper Adams join forces with guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Louis Hayes (aka “Hey” Lewis) to form the all-star sextet heard on Motor City Scene (also released as Stardust). The album opens with Stardust, or “music to get lost in” as described by All About Jazz. Adams takes the lead on Philson followed by Chambers and Hayes up-tempo version of Trio. Libeccio reflects a contrast of talent from the entire sextet, ending on a high note with their hard- swinging rendition of Bitty Ditty.

The Imperial is meticulously crafted from high grade materials

The Imperial features a solid spruce top, solid maple back and sides, and a maple neck. The fingerboard and cello style tailpiece are made of ebony. Hardware includes a set of gold Grover tuners and a Kent Armstrong floating humbucker. The overall style of the instrument is reminiscent of the understated, "clean" look pioneered by the great Jimmy D'Aquisto and later developed by Bob Benedetto. In an effort to keep embellishments to a minimum, the fingerboard is free of positioning dots (there are still side dots.)

The Imperial is largely based on the classic Gibson Johnny Smith model, a longstanding favorite among jazz guitarists for over half a century. Like Gibson's original design, this instrument is designed to retain its acoustic capabilities while simultaneously producing a rich and colorful amplified tone. It performs these duties exceedingly well as the Imperial sounds gorgeous both acoustically and electrically. Players looking to tackle Johnny Smith's legendary chord melody pieces will be pleased to find that the Imperial's 1 11/16th nut and short, 24 3/5" scale make even the most cumbersome chord shapes feel effortless.

This guitar comes setup with D'Addario 12 gauge flatwounds and fairly low, 2mm action. However, this instrument performs well with many types of setups, including traditional bebop (14 gauge flatwounds and very low action) and swing (higher action) setups.

Rocksteady Disco is extremely excited to release this multi-faceted EP from one of American dance music’s most prolific musical minds: JKriv. First up, is “Aguaxirê”— a deep Afro-Brazilian house cut in praise of the Yoruban orisha Oya. Full of moody Detroit-style pads, driving percussion, acid basslines, live trumpet (performed by Escort mainstay Nathan Warner), and an expertly plucked sample, this 9 minute odyssey is crafted for ecstatic dance floor use. Moving to the B side, we hear J rework the música popular brasileira classic “Ive Brussel” into a pool-side day party anthem, complete with a full overdub of the bassline by J with his Fender Jazz bass. Following that is a traditional deejay edit of “Deep Cove View”, a breezy and chilled out Brazilian jazz fusion cut with plenty of piano, slap bass, and vocal scatting. J flexes his production, performance, and arrangement prowess here, delivering 3 tracks ready for the party, the after hours, or the after-after hours.
