Night Cleaner first surfaced early 2015 with ‘Sketch for Winter III: Green Sleeves,’ a hermetic dose of bedroom psych-music that saw Atlanta guitarist and songwriter Matthew Lambert diverting away from the sprawling squall of his main band All the Saints. Now, Night Cleaner reinvents itself with ‘Even,’ a new set of six songs written, performed, produced, and recorded solely by Lambert.

Using a mix of MPC, guitar, Juno, Casio, and Rhodes, ‘Even’ wafts in a woozy cloud of sounds from the underbelly. It’s a dizzying and mystifying run of bizarre resonance, seemingly run through some disfigured diesel engine. In fact, the album was largely inspired by continuous drives around the city of Atlanta–downtown, East Point, College Park, and Decatur, to be exact.

Opener “Forty” sets the stage with an eerie mix of heaving, vaguely disgruntled guitar and slurred chants, all shepherded along by some autonomous and chugging vehicle. “Privacy Light” kicks into a slightly higher gear, stomping through its shambling beat culled from a drum machine and a slew of hand percussion. “Tight Nights” closes out the A-side with a blitz of isolated post-punk and a tonal symphony of feedback and noise.

“WDE” recalls Night Cleaner’s early meditations on stoned and blissed-out psych-pop while “Solids (No Tint)” is a modern kraut-pop masterpiece, riding a muted but brilliant riff and pushed along by a perfectly monotonous beat. Closer “Even” strips everything back for a more austere, altogether haunting drift of rural psychedelia that burrows deep into the subconscious.

"More than five years ago during the construction of the Puntigam Arcology, locally known as the Inverted Pyramid, artifacts were found in the low foundation strata of the construction site and fundamentally changed our picture of human evolution. Work was halted after a consortium of international archaeologists was granted a six month window to investigate the site before the essential building project continued.

Looking from Puntigam south towards the Slovenian border, the inverted pyramids march across the landscape providing essential living space for the expanding population of Mitteleuropa. Their influence has inexorably changed the European and global social picture in this half of the 21st Century but that six month hiatus in construction has arguably altered our self-image as a race.

Those artifacts that appeared across social media and on front pages across the planet point to one unavoidable conclusion: the human race originated in Puntigam.

The Puntigamer Hypothesis was recorded between December 2017 and February 2018 by the Entropy Circus: Solomon Kirchner, Sally Kitchener and Zali Krishna.
