From the depths comes this gripping new collection of stories from Paris-based producer Davka, and Mexico City-based Leon Lobato. 

On the title track, De Profundis, the pair fuse pulsing bass kicks with electrifying hand drums to underpin ethereal vocals and melancholic synth notes. The result is a thumping journey of sound, textured and layered with hidden gems throughout each of its nearly 8-minute run time.

The inspiration for the track is Oscar Wilde’s letter to an old acquaintance, written from prison. The first half of the correspondence recalls the heyday of their extravagant lifestyles — parties, dinners, hotels. The second half documents Wilde’s discovery of his own spirituality whilst in prison as a direct result of the excesses of his former life.

If Davka and Lobato’s opener De Profundis is the regret-tinged peak of an opulent and indulgent life, then Calm is the exploration of a softer, more introspective side of life.

Pumping drums give way to lighter kicks, kissed by piano flourishes and beautiful synthetic melodies. Calm is, as the name suggests, a peaceful, hypnotic ride that is packed with depth and feeling.

It leads to the EP’s closer, Le Chant De L’Eau, a track that pushes the project into uncharted territory. The hand drums and thicker beats of ‘De Profundis’ return, but this time they are layered over enchanting melodies and the sound of a single drop of water, playing on a loop.

The track is a perfect finish to the project: sweet, alluring, and very rhythmic, intertwining all of the themes that Davka and Lobato explore on the first two tracks of the EP.

And as if that wasn’t enough, the project comes with a package of remixes from Greg Nairo, Cocho, and George X, who each apply their signature sound to the work already done by Davka and Lobato, taking the cuts in brand new, unforeseen directions.

Returning to Proton Music with another brand-new track, Pole Folder voyages across the "Serengeti". Remixes come from UK and Egyptian artists.

An iconic figure, Pole Folder has been at the vanguard of underground dance music for two decades after a 24-carat 2001 debut for Bedrock Records followed by 2005's "Zero Gold" album. With 300 production credits to his name and his successful Reworck imprint, the Belgian was an early fixture on the Proton Music roster with his "Protected" and "Radio 101" EPs between 2006 and 2008. A decade-long hiatus then saw "A Glimpse into the Past" released in 2018 with remixes from Retza and Funkform. Now returning, "Serengeti" is a wonderfully atmospheric offering, with its thunderstorm opening and brooding pads. Building smoothly, offbeat hats provide metronomic precision as a glissando lead meanders gracefully across the top. Effected vocal cuts add further depth alongside a grooved bassline and heavy beat as Pole Folder's inspiring production work hits the heights in the third movement to mesmerising effect.

Striving to achieve "the perfect unity" of "diversified beat, sounds, rhythms and melodies into one Fulltone", the Egyptian has more than met his stated aim with a century of production credits for the likes of Kindisch, KATERMUKKE and Pablo Bolivar's Seven Villas, A welcome Proton Music debutant after a remix of Lanvary's "Akyoomen" for Particles in November 2017, the Fulltone reworking of "Serengeti" is a beautifully immaculate affair that delights with its tribal percussive hits and rolling groove. Subtle atmospheric touches can be heard throughout as water trickles and wind effects sweep across the sonic landscape. Smooth keys shimmer like water droplets as Fulltone's additional production material takes the original in a new and vibrant direction, while Pole Folder's sounds resonate throughout to anchor the remix within the Belgian's overarching narrative. The result is a gloriously creative and mature new interpretation.

Successful artists with long and impressive careers in dance music, Trilucid & Phil Martyn have seen their collaborative efforts feature on the likes of Perfecto, Black Hole and Markus Schulz's Coldharbour Recordings. Regulars on Particles since 2018 with their "Gone" EP and remix of Andre Sobota's "Unmute", Trilucid & Phil Martyn have seen success on the flagship imprint with the remix of Stas Dive's "Abyssal". A Trilucid solo offering saw "Glint" released in early 2019 with remixes from Subandrio and Cream & Deep Fog, while Phil Martyn returns to aid production on the forthcoming "Astral" EP. Reworking "Serengeti", the Trilucid & Phil Martyn remix is immediately characterised by a thumping beat and hot, simmering dancefloor nature. Making clever use of Pole Folder's original components, vocal effects create a hypnotic texture, while the smooth flowing lines of the original are immaculately juxtaposed against heavier rhythmic aspects. The result is a dynamic and striking new interpretation.

Lighting up the "Serengeti" with sublime new music, Pole Folder is joined by remixes from and Fulltone Trilucid & Phil Martyn on a safari of sonic discovery.
