Light Consumer - International Player [Artaphine Premiere]

New school techno star Lee Ann Roberts continues to light up 2021 with another brand new single on her own NowNow Records. Her standout original is backed by remixes from MRD and D.A.V.E. The Drummer.

This year already belongs to South African-born, Amsterdam-based Lee Ann Roberts. Her new label has had high-profile support from tastemakers like Charlotte de Witte & Ken Ishii, and is already well known for its off-grid techno sounds. Roberts herself debuted only last year on Suara. She immediately hit the number 2 spot on the Beatport Hard Techno chart and followed up with more on Octopus Warehouse Series. She has played festivals like Caprices this year and is lined up for BPM as well as plenty more headline gigs.

The excellent 'Feel' is a nine-minute, hard-edged roller. The drums are flat-footed and unrelenting, the synths bring turbulence and dark vocals add dystopian unease. The edgy textures and caustic pads make for a visceral groove that is perfectly designed for shadowy warehouse spaces. An Acid Trip Mix sees the track erupt on wild acid lines that spray about the mix and cannot fail to blow up the dance floor.

Remixer MRD hails from Norway and has released plenty of EPs and an album in a short space of time. He has a ferocious sound that fuses new wave, hardcore and banging techno as evidenced here. His version is break-neck techno with trance pads lighting up the airwaves in euphoric fashion.

The second remixer is the legendary London techno titan and label boss D.A.V.E. The Drummer. He heads up Hydraulix Records and Apex Recordings and always brings the fire. His take on 'Feel' is a wall-rattling banger with oversized bass. Saw-tooth synths rip up the track while the stark, strobe-lit stabs and some buried vocals make the floor sweat.

The is another powerful package of forward-looking techno from Lee Ann Roberts.

The Split format is a musical dialogue between two worlds, backgrounds and histories. After numerous contributions to various artist compilations of labels such as Exhale or Carbone Records, the debut EP of Drept resident Gräfin will be released on MITSU2000 on November 19, 2021. The Istanbul-based artist is no stranger to the scene - her tracks have made their way into the playlists of many DJs and could be heard during different club nights all across Europe and beyond. Gräfin's productions bring a breath of fresh air into the scene - although in line with the current revival of fast-paced techno trance, she manages to connect hard rhythms and immersive melodic elements in a very unique way. Her EP "A Twinkle On Milky Way" is fully dedicated to that sound. It includes four original productions by the Turkish artist and a remix by her label colleague Dwysedd.

With recent releases via labels such as Slam’s iconic Soma, Berlin-based DJ and producer Lars Huismann is quickly growing to become a familiar name of note within today’s modern techno landscape. Having featured as one of the artists on the label’s debut V/A release in February, with the German set to feature as a regular across the imprint in coming months, he unveils fresh shades to his sound palette on his return to Mutual Rytm with a combination of six slick techno cuts across his ‘Sounds From The Past I’ EP.
The powerful, rolling dynamics of ‘Surge’ open proceedings as Huismann quickly sets his stall, while ‘Collison’ veers into slick, looping territories as the energy and tension are kept tight and high. Next, ‘Echo’ ups the pace as tough kicks meet zipping melodies, filtered chords and looping vocal interjections amongst a medley of flurrying percussion licks, before ‘Funk Shed’ takes cues from its title and showcases a classy blend of classic Detroit-influenced sonics guided by sweeping synths. HAVEN return with another killer EP from Berlin duo New Frames - Mathis Mootz (aka The Panacea) and David Frisch. There’s no messing around in their second release on the imprint, with the A1 track ‘Clownhouse Reality’ designed pummelling bodies with it’s driving 4-4 rhythms, spiky synths and perfect techno sound design. The A2 continues this formula with ‘Variation Is A Feature Not A Flaw’ - where the huge pounding drums and rolling break samples interplay with wailing sound effects and a lively side-chained mid-range synth in another dance-floor burner.

The tempos increase on the flip with the B1 track, ‘Proton Isospace’, leading the charge with its sinister melodic stabs, rolling drum patterns, and creeping washes of mid-bass guaranteed to get feet moving. The B2 ends the record with a massive Manni Dee remix of New Frames modern classic ‘Scatter’ released on the first Sardonic Tonality compilation back in 2019. Now it's finally time to uncover the first release of Artaphine Records. Here two worlds collide creating various shapes in between. On one hand we have Tom Place, who is more known for his breakbeat excursions on Childsplay and Fly By Night, while Clotur takes more of a dive into the deep and groovy style of techno that resulted in releases on Counterchange and his own label Warok. 

Kicking off the EP with the solo track from Tom Place, setting off with the same pace as 'Tearing Down Your Walls', released on our VA last year. After that 'Melting Shapes' hits the perfect example of finding balance between artists with different production styles. With 'Object Model', the artists take the offbeat excursion while Clotur closes the EP with a 9-minute journey to the various corners of his production skills.

Arriving fresh from an impressive twelve months with releases via the likes of Token Records alongside his notable self-production only mixes, Italian DJ and producer Alarico continues to grow as a talent on the rise within techno. Combining nuances from across the genre to shape his own fast-paced and raw yet soulful sound, the Milan- based talent hasn’t slowed down since launching the alias in 2019. Having featured on the label’s VA ‘Federation Of Rythm I’ earlier this year, he now returns to SHDW and Obscure Shape’s blossoming Mutual Rytm imprint for his first EP on the label - delivering eight cuts across both digital and vinyl for ‘Boya’.
Kicking things off with the rugged and loopy ‘AE86’, Alarico quickly gets to work fusing driving grooves with slick vocal interjections, while title cut ‘Boya’ veers into slightly more raw and metallic territories guided by snappy claps and resounding kicks. ‘Killa Cut’ brings the funk on the B-side as soulful vocals ebb and glow amongst the mix, with ‘Lost In Time’ offering up pulsing bass beneath ethereal vocals, sweeping melodies and lively hats. The vinyl package is wrapped up by ‘The Ballad of Lisa’, with the infectious bleeping topline leading off-kilter clangs, slightly offsetting the track’s tight core groove. 
With three bonus tracks on the digital package, the Italian continues to bring the heat with ‘God Bless Hip Hop’ providing yet more punchy, skipping rhythms accented by rich chords. ‘Cigarettes After Sex’ carries a more manic and chaotic arrangement yet still manages to hold the track together amongst murky flutters, before closing the show via ‘The Rush Hour’ to deliver warping, arpeggiated basslines and a constant battle of tension and release.

Synthetik Sounds is back for its second installment after debuting on the scene in May 2022 with Ecilo’s Protech The Skyline EP

With Ecilo at the A&R helm, as well as two of Los Angeles’s most revered underground brands, 6AM and Synthetik Minds, spearheading its mission, Synthetik Sounds is now an established home for techno artists whose sound remains true to the ethos of underground techno.

Protech The Skyline affirmed the label’s intention of acting as a platform for artists whose output leans both on deep, hypnotic techno as well as darker, and harder shades of the genre. This second EP, entitled Rooted In Reality and courtesy of Los Angeles artist Stephen Disario, further cements Synthetik Sounds’ other goal of building bridges between North America, Europe, Asia and beyond.

The title track opens affairs as a carefully-crafted minimalistic groover, building in intensity ever-so-slightly as layers of percussion build on top of each other. Next up, “Time” takes off where “Rooted In Reality” left off, continuing its progression until it reaches peak-time rhythm as spatial, trippy soundscapes kick in. Here, Disario brings listeners down to earth in brilliant fashion, giving a few seconds of respite before kicking the track into overdrive once more.

The EP continues with the aptly named “6AM,” a track inspired by the late night or early morning hours, depending on which way you decide to look at it. Picture yourself in a packed, jacking and dark warehouse, as the first beams of sunlight begin seeping in through the cracks, and then imagine the perfect track to soundtrack those moments: that’s “6AM” for you, inspired by the countless Los Angeles warehouse moments Stephen Disario has shared with ravers in his years as a track selector and event curator.

Closing off the four-tracker is the high-intensity delivery that is “Blinker Situation.” A crescendo of percussion and an underlying subtle siren build anxiety and anticipation before diving down a rabbit hole of hypnotic, mental modulations.

Stuttgart’s David Löhlein has been involved in electronic music for a number of years and launched his Vision Ekstase event in his hometown of Stuttgart before providing the inaugural release on the newly formed label which picked up support from the likes of Ben Sims, Luke Slater, Efdemin and many more established names within the techno world. David now invites remixes from Mote-Evolver artist Rene Wise, Planet Rhythm producer VIL and Vision Ekstase residents Rove Ranger and Fabian Wegmeth.

The uplifting track, characterized by its iconic singing 303, captivated a wide audience of music lovers of all ages and backgrounds while receiving heavy play from the likes of Aurora Halal, Dr. Rubinstein, Charlotte De Witte, I Hate Models and Bicep. It now is revisited by four masterful artists: Schacke, Tin Man, nthng and Primal Code, each bringing a unique take. Opening the release, Schacke, a leader of Copenhagen’s fast techno-trance movement and rising techno star, delivers a fast and euphoric revamp. His ‘Kisloty People’ and ‘Trained To The Floor’ were some of 2019's biggest tunes and he now follows with his remix of 'Aurora Centralis' - a high energy, high tempo infectious groove amongst floating eerie synths. Tin Man is a master of acid undulations who has put out countless LPs and EPs on Acid Test and Global A Records. Here he serves up a perfectly soft and tender acid lullaby with zoned out pads glowing up top like distant stars. After cult classics on Lobster Theremin, Delsin and more, nthng’s dreamy, soulful sound is much loved and he provides his first ever remix here. Over 10 minutes he takes you on a cosmic ambient techno voyage to the edges of the galaxy on surging groves that leave you entranced.
For the final track, Primal Code have taken their dreamy sound, lush acid melodies and delicate drums to the likes of Hypnus, The Gods Planet and Semantica. It's a style that fits perfectly for this label and their remix is a warm, bubbly and deep techno classic with fuzzy acid and slick drum loops that lock you in the zone. Tin Man’s ‘Detroit Remix’ and nthng’s ‘Saiyan Dream’ are two superb digital bonus tracks to round things out.
