Momentos (moments)2015-2016, is a composition for amplified viola dedicated to Alexander Bruck. It consists in six movements or short pieces, separated interludes, that can be disposed in any order chosen by the interpreter. Not all the moments have to be always played. Each one of these moments are processes, trajectories, different ways of playing the viola searching for non traditional conditions where new sounds can arise. Each moment searches instability, but in that quest, the execution finally ends up finding distention, quietness. The work is non linear due to the modularity of the fragments, but also within the micro cosmos of each one of the moments found in experimentation, starting from the imagination of the interpreter to whom the work was dedicated, as well as in the different ways the composer tried to find the trajectories by playing the instrument without knowing how to. The executions of the viola player as well as the ones performed by the composer were transcribed resulting in these six determinate moments, but which could grow and become more numerous. The result, or al least the interpretation here recorded, make me think about complexity and simplicity, about a constant breathing and expiration that have no determinate beginning or end.

Consiste en seis movimientos o pequeñas piezas, interludios separados que pueden ser dispuestos en el orden que al intérprete le plazca. No todos los momentos tienen que ser siempre tocados. Cada uno de estos momentos son procesos, trayectorias, distintas maneras de tocar la viola buscando condiciones no tradicionales dentro de las cuáles puedan aparecer sonidos nuevos. Cada momento busca la inestabilidad, pero en esa búsqueda la ejecución finalmente termina encontrando la distención, la quietud. La obra es no lineal debido a la modularidad de los fragmentos, pero también dentro del micro cosmos de cada uno de los momentos encontrados en la experimentación, partiendo tanto de la inventiva del intérprete al que se le dedicó la obra, como a las maneras en que el compositor intentó por si mismo encontrar esas trayectorias ejecutando el instrumento sin saber tocarlo. Tanto las ejecuciones del violista como las del compositor fueron luego transcritas resultando en esos seis momentos determinados, pero que podrían crecer y ser más numerosos. El resultado, o por lo menos la interpretación aquí grabada, me hace pensar en la complejidad y en la simplicidad, en una especie de respiración y expiración constantes que no tienen un principio o un final determinados.

This work was originally an electroacoustic composition for 6 channels commissioned by the IMEB institute in Bourges on November 2008, and finished in May 2009. All the material of the piece was generated at the IMEB studios using digital and analog gear, and then it was mainly mixed in my personal studio in Mexico City.
The main idea of this work was to create a sonic metaphor of acoustic ecosystems, having different species from different geographies and climates. I wanted to generate a diversity of sounds that interrelate to each other, to make transitions that go from noisy textures to periodic sounds, but contemplating also the sounds that exist between the discontinuous and the continuous, and also to juxtapose all these textural rythms along with the different timber qualities of the sounds. Many of these sonic elements were made from percussive and wind instruments, manipulating them in such a way (synchronic and quasi synchronic granulation, and source filter synthesis) that they became similar to insect sounds such as cicadas and crickets. Other textures were produced through convolution of insect sounds with water, cracking fire, etc, and finally, the rest were made with analog synthesis using a Mini Moog (analog) and a Waldorf (digital-analog) synthesizer.
A second version of the piece was made one year later, adding a wind ensemble constituted by Flute, Clarinet, Flute in G and Bass Clarinet. The sounds of these four instruments added up in the integration of a new acoustic species cohabiting and interacting with the different electronic genera. This new version was crated to be used for a dance coreography by Alicia Sanchez that never happened. It was finally premiered for the first time years later, on February 8th 2019 by the Mexican Cepromusic Ensemble directet by Jose Luis Castillo in the Manuel M. Ponce hall in Bellas Artes, Mexico City.
