The title “Climbing With Escher” came from main riff of the song. Where we start on Em (Aeolian), and move up the Major Scale one mode at a time, playing root-third-sevenths until we reach Em again, and start all over. Kind of like an Escher work where we would get to the top of the stairs only to find ourselves back at the start again. 
The solo is improvised over A Dorian and E Aeolian chords.
