When was the last time you listened to an actual ‘mixtape’? You probably think of one of the many mixes inhabiting our digital social spheres, which you might give a quick click or a fast listen. Dutch Drum and Bass connoisseurs Lenzman & Dan Stezo go back in time with the launch of their ‘Soul Tape’, an actual 60 minute cassette tape meant for the discerning Drum and Bass lover.

The Soul Tape is a limited give-away. The hand-crafted package comes in a hard-cover box, with additional T-shirt and a variety of stickers - all with custom artwork by Team Blazin'. Besides that The Soul Tape is a ‘cool’ and fresh (but hyper-traditional) take on the mix-format, it stems from Lenzman and Dan Stezo's 90s ritual of making Hiphop tapes for each other in school.

The Soul Tape exhibits tracks from the world’s finest Drum and Bass artists, blended by Lenzman with Dan Stezo’s narrative slang and distinct voice-over. As a combination they have worked together since 2003, and recently increased their collaborative spirit both on stage and on record. 2014 saw their first release ‘Move & Focus’ together as a combination on the esteemed Metalheadz imprint as part of Lenzman's debut album 'Looking At The Stars.

Lenzman’s tremendous success in his genre and his tour the force around the world doesn't keep him from maintaining a close circle. Long time confidant Team Blazin' adds the artwork in the form of handwritten calligraphy which articulates the Hiphop aesthetics, the three artists’ connecting factor and their shared stylistic background.

The Soul Tape is not for sale, as it is an initiative out of love for the craft, the music and their heritage. The 50 limited edition tapes will be given away to fans over a period of time. As it's holiday season, starting with 10 units via a Facebook “Share to Win” competition. Head over to the Metalheadz Facebook page and you might win a copy of The Soul Tape.

“When we were kids growing up it was all about tapes. It was a time where music was hard to come by and albums were played from start to finish, over and over... It was also a time where we made mixtapes for each other, recorded off CD, radio, whatever. Back then it was Hiphop. We are taking that aesthetics and giving you a piece of nostalgia which celebrates the love for our craft. We've made you a mixtape. This time it's not Hiphop but Drum and Bass music. This a hard-crafted package: 50 slices of nostalgia. Inside you will find a 60 minute tape, mixed and hosted by Lenzman and Dan Stezo. The Ulterior Motive duo may have become something of a welcome fixture at FABRICLIVE over the last few years but please, rest assured, that comment is not supposed to come across like we're sat here, resting on their laurels or relying on them time and time again to hold down a peak time dancefloor (the fact that they're repeatedly shown themselves to be adept at exactly that does bear repeating though). It's more their tunes/mixes/sets and general contributions to drum & bass as an entity that we find such a constant winner. Take this 30 minute promo mix, made ahead of the lads' upcoming appearance in Room Two at the annual Playaz Easter Special on Friday 27th March: yes, it's a telltale mixture of stark, rolling rhythms with lashings of testing low end but it's also got oodles of interesting snares, contorted and confusing drum fills, agitated vocal samples, swelling background tones and what one assumes is a VIP mix of DRS' omnipresent 'Count To Ten.' It's overpoweringly obvious that it's been put together by hands that respect and love the music and the platform. 

So, it goes without saying, if your a fan of drum & bass, you should download and enjoy this. Just make sure you don't miss them here at the end of the month.

SCAR are back on Headz with their most accomplished EP to date. 
The release kicks off with 'Caged', a subbed out banger with skipping drums and rave stabs and mid range accents. Confident and bashy, it's sure to be a big tune. 
Track two is 'Free Fall' w/ Artificial Intelligence where both production duos team up on a stepping track with screwface bass. The mood is lightened by the vocal refrain gliding over the top bringing another element to the track. 
'Your Move' follows, a soulful jungle track , it’s all about the light pads Vs the rough drums. 'Fall From Grace' takes the jungle aesthetic and pushes it further with clever edits and big basslines. 'Return To Swerve' says exactly what it does on the tin- takes it back to the days where the soulful mid weeker reigned supreme, a great end to a great EP.

The unstoppable London duo comprising Glenn Herweijer and Zula Warner have recently raised the bar.
