This podcast is the first part of a new project, Lectures For Nobody, exploring the changing nature of teaching and university during the pandemic. The project is being developed by Andy Field as part of his fellowship with Maarten Koeners and the Playful University at Exeter. As part of this project Andy is keen to speak with other teachers and students from across the university, to find out more about their experience of the last year. Lectures For Nobody

'The Living Room' is a podcast created by TrailMix[ED] (Dr Bram Thomas Arnold)which features original sound work and conversations between  Professor Caitlin DeSilvey from University of Exeter and Professor Martin Grünfeld from the University of Copenhagen. 

These podcast has been released to coincide with an exhibition at Copenhagen’s Medical Museion which explores explores what happens when museum objects are allowed to change and decay. Objects on display in the ‘Living Room’ at Copenhagen’s Medical Museion include audio reels colonised with mould and pink oyster mushrooms growing on discarded medical books.   

Opened to the public in November 2021, the room in the museum’s basement contains objects that are not part of the official collection, which would otherwise have been disposed of. Professor Grünfeld, of Medical Museion and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research at the University of Copenhagen, collaborated with Professor DeSilvey, of the University of Exeter’s Environment and Sustainability Institute, to develop the ideas that informed the collective interdisciplinary project at Medical Museion.

Collaborating across conservation science, artistic practice and the humanities, the Living Room project accommodates—and sometime actively encourages—the appetites of ‘heritage eaters’ such as fungi and insect larvae.

The Living Room

‘I Remember: Exeter’s Memory of the Covid-19 Pandemic’ is an audiobook created by Professor David Tollerton (University of Exeter) in association with Exeter City Council and the Mayoralty. It draws together collective memories of the pandemic.

The contributions were gathered from people across Exeter in January 2025. They were collected and edited by David Tollerton using a model devised by Alec Finlay and Joe Brainard. The audiobook is read by Leah Lawford.

They are varied in their emotions and content, and some may be difficult to hear. But we think that they’re so important to be shared.

The project is tied to the fifth anniversary of the first lockdown, and associated with the rededication of a memorial tree and plaque in Northernhay Gardens. The rededication ceremony took place on 23 March 2025.

I remember- Exeter's memory of the Covid-19 pandemic

Part of Tender Acts, a 2024/2025 Arts Commission by Arts and Culture University of Exeter. The commission has been led by Artist Georgia Gendall and creative producers Field Notes. Together they brought together staff, students and artists at the University of Exeter's Cornwall campuses, to curate and develop a programme of creative activity exploring a sense of belonging to place. 

On Wednesday 26 March 2025, the Tender Acts team created a silent disco like no other at the Penryn campus library, where 80+ participants turned up to tune into the unnoticed rhythms that shape the everyday soundscape of campus.

Members of the SU Birdwatching Society, Life Drawing Society, Anime & Manga Society, Rugby Ladies, and Puppetry collaborated with artists Georgia Gendall, Naomi Frears, and Liam Jolly to capture the hidden beats and rhythms of campus life. The sounds they created and recorded were then developed into the set list for the silent disco which encouraged listeners to experienceand hear the unique sounds of the Penryn campus in a whole new way.

This track has been created out of sounds at the Penryn campus including 'Ladies Rugby - 'Ready, ready up!', Soap dispenser, Accessibility lift - Tremough House Annex'.

Full composition with solo flute and piano accompaniment - VSimulators Data

This piece has been created as part of our 2019/2020 Creative Fellowship 'Translating Data into Art', a collaboration between musician Domenico Vicinanza and Dr Genevieve Williams from the University of Exeter's College of Medicine and Health and Julie Lewis-Thompson from VSimulators. 

This piece has been created by Domenico for marimba and harp. It is based on identifying individual musical notes from a recording he did with a contact microphone placed on the vibrating platform. The collection of notes has been then played by a marimba and a harp, orchestrated so that one was almost echoing the other, in a continuous dialogue between the two.

VSims Synergy(Marimba and Harp)

A piece created as part of our 2019/2020 Creative Fellowship between musician Domenico Vicinanza, Dr Genevieve Williams from the University of Exeter's College of Medicine and Health and Julie Lewis-Thompson from VSimulators.

VSims Continuous Flow, is based on extracting regular patterns from the waveform, mapping them to a music scale and sharing them between piano and harp, according to their characteristics and features. The piece has naturally some of the melody fragments flowing from one instrument to the other, played with their own pitch, timbre and rhythm. This was for me a sort of natural metaphor of the continual exchange between mechanics and music, art and science.

VSims Continuous Flow

A piece created as part of our 2019/2020 Creative Fellowship between musician Domenico Vicinanza, Dr Genevieve Williams from the University of Exeter's College of Medicine and Health and Julie Lewis-Thompson from VSimulators.

VSims Audio is an experimental piece about the richness of the vibrations; the complex waveforms captured by the sensors which have been filtered with special "harmonic sieves" looking for chords, melody fragments and harmonies. Domenico then arranged them together and added reverberation to create long sound tails. This is the most "organic" of the pieces and in some way the best one to communicate the smoothness of VSimulator and its majestic, elegant and fluid oscillation.

Adam Lusby (Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship, UoE Business School) hosts a conversation with Sarah Campbell (Associate Director Arts and Culture, UoE) where they explore the ideas associated with creativity, curiosity, and diversity.

It was originally recorded as part of series for the module Impactful Entrepreneurship which is a first year elective module which is also part of a unique open pathway called With Proficiency in Entrepreneurship (WPI-E). This pathway allows students to gain Proficiency in Entrepreneurship as part of their degree. As we face increased risk from global challenges our ability to creatively approach them and be curious to new ideas and where those ideas might come from is an important lesson for budding entrepreneurs who seek to have a positive impact on the world.
