Topological Music Project — Study 01

This piece explores how sequences of numbers — in this case, prime numbers — can be translated into evolving harmonic textures.

Each chord is formed from three consecutive numbers, dynamically mapped to musical pitch using a local normalization technique.

The result is a flowing structure where notes slide in and out of chords, with rhythm tied to the internal pitch spread.

Rendered from a generated MusicXML score using Python and MuseScore, this excerpt forms part of a larger research and artistic project investigating how mathematical topology and numerical growth can be heard through spatial and harmonic transformations.

Excerpt from a sound installation whereby two wind gongs vibrate according to ondographic data collected between January 2018 and December 2018, by the coastal and oceanic buoys off the Leixões Port, Portugal. One year worth of data compressed and sonified into one hour, transmitted to the gongs via transducers. Data provided courtesy of Instituto Hidrográfico.

Performance, composition, sound installations, and programming. I work as a professor of music technology at NTNU.
I am particularly interested in the interaction of composition and improvisation, and I use various custom software solutions for improvisatory interplay between me and the computer.
Another area of special focus for me is granular synthesis (what I'd like to term "particle synthesis" when merging all known forms of the granular technique). I use Csound and Python as my main tools, and I've designed some opcodes for the Csound language.
In the past I have worked with the groups Krøyt and Motorpsycho.
