The One That You Choose 2024

Come out and rise up from
your down under land,
tearing your doubts and failures
asunder and stand
like the star that you are,
with your well-worn guitar
baptized in the applause
of many thundering hands.

Each song starts
with one note
plus blunders unplanned,
each chord finds progressions
till they meet your demands
then each vocal and lyric
starts to flow and expand,
in your journey to find
music's sweet wonderland.

Millions traveled its path
over decades of time,
many fell by the wayside
as they failed to find,
the key that fit perfectly
to all listeners ears,
you are part of a legacy
you must play
through your fears.

Even Elvis had flops
David Bowie faced losses
with his first albums hung
round his neck.... albatrosses,
but their hunger persisted
chasing hits but more cautious,
till their names brought them fame
and their music was flawless.

There are ten million artists
all trying to achieve
the top of a long list
though many find grief,
but the joy of making music
brings each one some relief
and the ones that will make it
bleed for what they believe.

Every song starts with one note
make each one noteworthy,
till your fingers are calloused
and your eyesight grows blurry
never settling for less
never trying to hurry
till you have a song list
that makes your fans all scurry
to hear your next tune
but you've got to stay thirsty.

Don't rest on your laurels
they become crowns of thorns,
each soul's muse is a demon
and they cannot be scorned,
there are bands who have vanished
and their fans do not mourn
those concerts where they offered
the same old songs, tired and worn.

I speak from experience
I'm one of ten million
who is still not a star
I'm just a musical civilian,
but I write music daily
and I'm ready and willing,
though that wonderland
escapes me
my life's still fulfilling,
out there hustling the crowds
playing bars and pavilions.

And maybe someday
if fate blesses my dreams
I'll see you backstage
in a room that is green,
as we both share top billings
that we haven't yet seen.

Shadows and Light

1942 Mining Disaster....
An anguished cry...a shatttering roar
as tons of rocks crash to the floor
the workers watch all terrified
with certainty the men have died
but from below there comes a cry
a man who won't give up or die
he screams amidst the grisly dead
with thoughts of freedom in his head
the air is choked with dust and gas
he must work fast to clear a pass
he lunges forward numb with shock
stripping his flesh while clawing rock
his bloody fingers pay no mind
they dig and claw at all they find
moving upward from this pit
inching forward...bit..by...bit
Around him many corpses lay
with eyes that seemed to mock his way
for they'd escaped the tunnel's gloom
and left him there to face his doom
He hates them all.. they can't help fight
him in this flight to life and light
he turns his back on friends he'd known
to plow and hammer his way home
above.... the crews, like blinded moles
by guesswork drill their frantic holes
someday they too could share this fate
they whisper prayers for their trapped mates
but deep with the bowels of Hell
the air grows thin....his lungs grow frail
and though his progress is beginning
Death sits beside him...calmly grinning
Flat on his back he gasps for air
Death hovers now..he does not care
his eyes begin to close in sleep
to join those trapped below... so deep
but memories of bright city lights
the taste of waters cool delight
his wife and children fill his sight
so once again he turns to fight
Then Suddenly....
to his surprise
a star erupts to blind his eyes
a thousand arms reach in to grasp
and pull him from death's wicked clasp

he later wakes
in a sterile place
with earth's vomit
cleansed from his face
~
and now immune
from all his fears
for the men who died
he sheds a tear.

The increments of my life
are divided by the love’s I knew,
all born in innocence
some died from detriments
but the best of them all was you.

plus some torrid affairs

a few more siblings

first canine,
then a girl
sharing love’s
innocence world.

And some just all rights
Plus some torrid affairs,
That will never compare
to the love we share
that’s so exquisitely rare…..

The Hollow-Days Of Addiction.
(A Christmas message for all )

Christmas has come back again
For the third year in a row
And we haven't seen 
our precious son
Ever since he had to go
To jail then off to rehab
Then violating 
two probation's
the court ordered no contact
So we've had no conversations
Cause he'd abused 
his Mom so much
Leaving her soul terrified
and came after me so angrily
Every time that he got high
we both tried in 
every way we could
But then we had to say goodbye....


Christmas on drugs and alcohol 
Was never a good mix
Hanukkah plus cruel addictions
Just brings candle sadly lit
Santa Claus and faith in God
Are not enough to bring a fix
Only he can save himself
No one else can heal his needs
That have made both our hearts bleed
while he spends his hollow days
Struggling to find ways to succeed.


He'll spend another Christmas
In sober living all alone
Far away from both his parents
Knowing that he can't come home
And it cuts us deeply to the bone
Cause our tough love is no fun
But drugs and alcohol have stolen
Our most precious son
Until he proves that he is cured
and his addictions are all done.

So if you too are like our son
Suffering the same afflictions
I hope this poem moves you to flee
Back to the true life 
you've been missing
Because those who 
love you can't survive
Living with the endless friction
Of your lies and thefts 
And thier hopes left swept
Underneath your opposition
Your loved ones all must separate
themselves from your positions
Of your loving highs even as they cry
Over your tragic conditions
Leaving you alone 
while they sit at home
Praying for you and each one wishing
That you will give all that you've lost
Some serious recognition
Before you end up lying 
Under a marble inscription
that leaves them all 
Without your love
Another victim of addiction
so many others just like you 
Have faced Death's Benedictions....
