For our first Truancy Volume of the year we welcome Peverelist, a producer and DJ whose long ties with Bristol have given him the means to document a thriving and visionary community over the last thirteen years. Genres have held almost no relevancy to him throughout his career, and he's described his vision and role as a label owner as simply being able to forge and create new narratives in dance music while simultaneously showcasing the talent the city of Bristol regularly had to offer. Whilst a large part of his story harks back to breaking down the framework of what the-then emerging sound of dubstep could be, it's the genre diversifying nature of his three labels, Punch Drunk, Livity Sound and sister label Dnuos Ytivil that have made him such an important figure in UK dance music. As a producer himself, it's almost too easy to recall to mind any of the classics or the one-day-to be in his discography - the now Drake sampled "Roll With The Punches", "Over Here" with Appleblim, "Aztec Chant", "Infinity Is Now", "Under Clearing Skies" from his most recent album Tessellations and his numerous collaborations with Kowton, Asusu and Hodge have made him revered by fans and his peers. 

Where many young producers from Bristol will cite Peverelist as an influence, he in turn will say Smith & Mighty paved the way for artists such as himself and and fellow DJ and friend, Pinch. Ashley Road Sessions 88-94, a collaborative label release via Punch Drunk and Tectonic that came out in November, marks the 30th anniversary of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty's first single as a duo. As well as kickstarting our 2019 Truancy Volumes, we caught up with Peverelist to discuss the landmark compilation, his working working relationship with Rob Smith, producing IDLE50 and the element of learning as you go when running a label.

OKO DJ is a core member of a few key collectives: the first is the Brothers From Different Mothers label she has been signed to, and the second is LYL Radio, where she heads up the Paris department and hosts the monthly Synchronisme ou Barberie with the Bruits de la Passion crew, as well as her own women-only show Pu$$y Nightmare. She is utterly diverse in the music she plays, which ranges from doom laden psych to 80s synth to cold body music via futuristic soundscapes. Mixing with a focus on vibe and feeling rather than scene or style, she is freed up to go wherever the music takes her. 

And so it is that her mix starts with an energised spoken word monologue then transitions to experimental beats, spooky synth tracks and jungle all within the first fifteen minutes. Dark and foreboding passages are often offset by more exotic moments of calming ambiance and for every frazzled synth and blizzard of drums there is a restorative dub moment to reset the mood. Such a series of highs and lows, darks and lights is not often found in the same set, and what’s what sets OKO DJ apart.

While the blends here may move through a variety of tempos, this is an hour of music schooled in dub science and cloaked in thick, trippy textures. The first third of the mix sees Forest Drive West running at dancehall tempo, delivering ultra-heavy dubwise riddims which will delight anyone who’s dug the techno dancehall sound of labels like Gobstopper and Livity Sound in recent years. The mid-section takes the listener even deeper, dubbing out in the African Head Charge style, before Forest Drive West emerges with some thrilling experimental jungle in the mix’s second half.

Producer, DJ and all-round Bristolian legend Peverelist takes us deep into the thicket of his Livity Sound label on this Bleep mix. Across just over an hour here Peverelist spins tracks released either via Livity or its sub-label Ytivil Dnuos. This homogenous approach means that the mix as a whole is suffused with the atmospheric, slightly fourth-world sensibility that characterises the Livity brand, yet still remains danceable from start to finish. Forest Drive West, Bakongo, Kouslin and DJ Plead are among those who have their percussive leftfield techno productions blended together by Peverelist’s hand here. Expect bassweight, dubby textures and drums galore.
