Influences: I was introduced to the world of electronic music while growing up in the Midwest, so I was heavily influenced by the sounds coming out of Detroit and Chicago. More recently I’ve found that as time goes on, I’ve been going further back in time with the music that influences me. Recent loves include 90s electronic music, 80s goth music, and early industrial music. Some examples artists include Luke Vibert, Coil, Plastikman, Future Sound of London, Drexciya, and Detroit Escalator Company. This recording is a live set of my original acid, house, & techno productions, but I’ve also started playing downtempo & ambient live sets as well. 

Affiliations/Residencies/Projects: I’ve been a resident artist for San Francisco collective As You Like It for the last 8 years. I’ve also released records with the labels God Particle and Beretta Music.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: Put yourself out there, ask questions, surround yourself with supportive people & ignore any haters. Remember to also be supportive of your fellow artists. Practice often, even when things aren’t flowing easily. Don’t be afraid to try new approaches & techniques, embrace the challenge that comes with it.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: Lots of things might make you want to quit, but you can use that energy to keep going. Your presence is important. Don't sweat the mistakes and don't be afraid to ask for help, especially from other women/nonbinary/artists of color/queer DJs and producers.  I wish I would have done this sooner - I stubbornly tried to do it all on my own, which actually held me back more than it pushed me forward. We are here to help you. Our strength is in our numbers.  Give your love and support to as many people as you can. Teach as many people how to produce and DJ as you can. At some point, love and support will become the norm.

We've been wanting a podcast from midwest techno legend Noncompliant  (@noncompliant1) for quite some time and are excited that it's finally come to fruition. After playing out steadily in the midwest since the 90's under the name DJ Shiva, she began putting out records as Noncompliant a few years ago and finally got the well deserved worldwide recognition as the dance floor slayer that she had always been.

When I was 11, my dad and I took a summer road trip through Idaho and Montana.
While driving through the mountains, we came to such an elevation that even in the
middle of July, a snowfall began. We stopped the truck at a small lake along the road
as the large flakes gracefully descended. From here, we watched as the snow landed
and evaporated into a thin mist resting on the surface of the water - transfixed by the
strangeness and stillness of the moment. As I journey back through memory, I am
transported to a vision of him standing by the water, camera in hand, quietly observing
the moment.
