冬の冷たい風が吹き込む教室。窓際には小さな紙の雪の結晶が貼られ、もうすぐクリスマスだと誰もが意識していた。中学2年のサオとレンは、今年最後の「ペアテスト」に挑むことになった。

「ねえレン、今日は絶対に負けられないね」
サオが笑いながら言うと、レンは少し照れたように頷いた。
「でも、勝ち負けじゃなくて…二人で一つの答えを見つけるんだろ？」

試験問題は難しかった。英語の長文、数学の応用問題。サオは焦って鉛筆を走らせ、レンは冷静に答えを整理する。時に意見がぶつかり、時に笑い合いながら、二人は答案用紙に「二人だけの答え」を刻んでいった。

テストが終わると、先生が「今日は特別に」と言って、答案用紙を星型に切り抜いて黒板に貼った。教室の壁には、ペアごとの星が並び、まるで一つのクリスマスツリーのように輝いていた。

「見て、僕らの星、真ん中にあるよ」
レンが指差すと、サオは嬉しそうに笑った。
「二人で頑張ったから、ちゃんと光ってるんだね」

レンが驚いてサオを見ると、サオの瞳に映る光はまるで祝福のようだった。
「これ…誰かが見守ってくれてるのかな」
サオが呟くと、風の中に微かな声が響いた。

それはまるでイエス・キリストの祝福の言葉のように、二人の心に届いた。

レンはそっとサオの手を握り、サオも握り返す。
「僕らの答えは、ずっと一緒にあるんだね」

رانہوفر آگ پر قابو پا رہا تھا،
اپیکیئس خوشبوؤں کو جادو کی طرح بُن رہا تھا۔

ان کی حرکات ایک رقص جیسی تھیں۔
مصالحے ستاروں کی گرد کی طرح بکھر رہے تھے،
گوشت چاندنی کی طرح چمک رہا تھا،
اور چٹنیاں پگھلے ہوئے رات کے آسمان کی طرح گہری اور میٹھی بہہ رہی تھیں۔

ہر ڈش ایک ساتھ فن اور فریب تھی:

• ایک ٹیرین، جو ایک ہی نوالے میں چار موسموں کا سفر کراتا تھا
• ایک وائن ساس، جو زبان پر یادیں جگاتا تھا
• سنہری ٹرفل، اتنے الٰہی کہ رومی بادشاہ بھی گھٹنے ٹیک دیں
• اور سب سے عظیم کرسمس روسٹ — گرم اور روشن، جیسے کھانے والے کے مستقبل کو منور کر رہا ہو


اس میں کوئی زہر نہ تھا۔
پھر بھی ذائقہ براہِ راست روح کو چھو رہا تھا۔

✨ پہلا اور آخری عشائیہ

جب کھانے چکھے گئے، ہر مہمان ایسے مسکرایا جیسے اسے بصیرت حاصل ہوئی ہو۔

ذائقہ دیوانگی نہیں تھا، بلکہ شفقت تھی۔
مگر اس کی نرمی حد سے زیادہ تھی،
اس کی خوبصورتی ناقابلِ برداشت حد تک پاکیزہ تھی۔

پلیٹ در پلیٹ۔

ہر روح خوشی میں آزاد ہو گئی،
خاموشی سے اپنی تقدیر پوری کرتی ہوئی۔

ایک کرسی، پھر دوسری خالی ہو گئی،
یہاں تک کہ صرف شیطان کلاز باقی رہ گیا۔

اس نے اپنی شراب اٹھائی اور ایک خود کلامی کی طرح سرگوشی کی:

“کامل۔
کھانا — اتنا خوبصورت کہ روح چرا سکتا ہے۔”

رانہوفر اور اپیکیئس نے اپنی پلیٹوں کے ذریعے ایک دوسرے کو احترام دیا،
پھر آہستہ آہستہ غائب ہو گئے۔

جب اس “ناقابلِ تکرار عشائیہ” پر پردہ گرا،
ڈیل مونیکو کی روشنیاں نرم لہروں میں جھلملائیں۔

یہ اس بات کا ثبوت تھا کہ وہ رات واقعی موجود تھی،
اور ہمیشہ کے لیے دنیا میں ایک معجزہ کے طور پر کندہ ہو گئی۔

In a small counseling room next to the teachers’ office at Tomoiku Junior High School, Haruto and Kanon sat facing each other. Beside them, across the desk, was Mr. Matsushita, smiling as he held their peer evaluation sheets.

“You know that the evaluation for the Pair Test isn’t just given by us teachers, but also reflects the assessments from other pairs, right?” Matsushita asked gently.
“Of course!” Haruto replied cheerfully.

“Well then, today I’d like to talk a little about those evaluations. Especially this time, I think it’s a good opportunity to reflect on how other pairs see you.”

Kanon, looking a bit nervous, asked, “How was our evaluation?”

“Overall, there were many positive comments. Things like ‘Their presentations are always easy to understand’ and ‘They come up with creative and interesting ideas.’ But there were also a few suggestions for improvement.”

“Yeah. People said we always come up with eye-catching ideas, but sometimes our explanations lack detail.”
“That’s true. We often push forward with momentum, so some details get left out.”
“Is that really so important? As long as the idea is interesting, everyone will be convinced, right?”
“It’s not a bad way to think, but for others to be convinced, you need to explain the background and process clearly.”

Matsushita spoke quietly. “Ideas are important, but the ability to communicate them is just as important.”
“No matter how hard we work, if others don’t understand, it’s meaningless.”

Kanon smiled slightly. “I’m glad you understand.” Haruto gave a shy smile in return.

Matsushita then shifted the topic. “Let’s talk about your evaluations of other pairs. Which pair left the strongest impression on you?”
Haruto quickly raised his hand. “I think Aoki and Takahashi’s pair was great! Their presentation was really careful and easy to follow.”
“They collected data to support their ideas, and that made it very convincing.”
“I see. Then, on the other hand, was there a pair you thought needed more improvement?”
“Maybe Sato and Shiraishi’s pair. Their idea was good, but the explanation was hard to follow.”
“But I could tell they worked really hard, so maybe we should have listened to them more carefully.”

Matsushita nodded with satisfaction. “Evaluation isn’t about criticizing others, but about learning together. It’s important to recognize their strengths as well.”

After the meeting, the two walked back to the classroom.
“You know, evaluation isn’t just about giving scores. It makes you think about a lot of things,” Haruto murmured.
“That’s right,” Kanon smiled. “We need to make more effort to explain things clearly.”
“If you say so, I’ll be more careful in the next Pair Test. But in return, you have to support my ideas more.”
“Of course. That’s what being a pair is all about.”

The cool breeze at the end of summer passed between them, strengthening their determination for the next challenge.
