The cold winter wind swept into the classroom. On the window, a paper Christmas tree swayed gently, reminding everyone that the holiday was near. Asuka and Shou sat facing each other in the corner, preparing for the last pair test of the year.

The cap of the mechanical pencil Shou handed back was loose, and Asuka sighed softly as she fixed it. Shou doodled a Santa hat on the edge of his solved problem sheet and grinned, showing it to her. His innocence made Asuka’s lips curve into a smile despite herself.

But when an old Christmas song began to play through the school broadcast, Shou’s expression suddenly clouded. Asuka pretended not to notice and kept working on her paper. Yet his fingers trembled slightly, redoing the same calculation again and again. A quiet unease seeped into her chest. When Asuka touched the cold window frame, her fingertips stung from the chill.
“This Christmas… all I can do is study,” Shou murmured, his voice distant, not sounding like a joke at all.

As the sunset painted the classroom in crimson, Asuka kept glancing sideways at him. Normally, he would scratch his head cheerfully when stuck on a hard problem, but today was different. The doodled Santa hat looked strangely hollow.
She wanted to ask, “Is something wrong?” but Shou smiled first, saying, “I’m fine.” That smile itself was fragile, dangerous. Each time the paper tree swayed by the window, Asuka’s chest tightened.

When Shou stood up, a slip of paper fell from between the pages. Asuka picked it up—
a hospital appointment card.
The date: Christmas Day.

Her breath froze. When Shou returned, the tears she had held back spilled over.
“Why didn’t you tell me…?”
Shou looked startled, then lowered his eyes.
“I was scared. If I didn’t keep smiling, I thought I’d cry.”
Her tears fell onto the desk. With trembling hands, she gripped his fingers tightly.
“If you’re going, then I’ll go with you. That’s more important than any test.”

The next day, they went to the hospital together. In the waiting room, Asuka held Shou’s hand and prayed silently. When he finally returned, his eyes were wide.
“Asuka… it’s okay. It wasn’t serious. They said it’s almost like a miracle.”
His voice shook. Asuka pressed her hand to her chest, crying and laughing at once.
“Thank goodness…”

Back at school, the classroom glowed with the evening sun. The paper Christmas tree that had swayed endlessly—
now, without any wind, it stood still.

Asuka took a small package from her bag.
“I was going to give this to you today.”
Inside the box were replacement leads for his mechanical pencil, which he often lost, and a tiny keychain shaped like his doodled Santa hat.

Shou’s tears fell freely.
“Asuka… thank you. All that smiling… it finally feels worth it.”

Asuka gently tugged at his sleeve.
“Next year, the tests, and everything after… I’ll be with you.”

Outside the window, fine snow began to fall. The paper Christmas tree no longer swayed. It simply stood there, as if blessing the future of the two who had chosen to walk together.
