Trail of Tears is part of a huge amount of ideas I was working with as part of the Gear Demo work I do. This was some practice work looping with the Line6 M9 & the Alesis Bitrman, Cheri's insane processor that she loved so much and used on a lot of her sound design. this and many of the pieces in this series are dedicated to her unsung genius as a synthesist, electronic percussionist....amazing woman.

A favorite piece that I love to do live -- by one of my biggest influences on guitar...the late great Sonny Sharrock. If you don't know his music RUN over to youTube and spend some time. So lucky and fortunate to have seen him countless times in the late 80s/early 90s. He sadly passed away in 1994 at age 53. Just a complete original voice, bringing together blues, jazz, rock , slide guitar and NOISE. This avuncular gentleman in a suit fools you as he took the stage, then SHARDS of sound, bizarre unpredictable & beautiful noises flew out of his amp. He could be quiet and lyrical just as easily as taking the top of your head off.

just a shout out to one of the seminal experimentalist composers I studied. Little known is that I actually minored in Music at Rutgers University in the 80s (which is why I have minor knowledge). But I took a lot of electronic music classes, some with the estimable Phil Corner and also Daniel Goode, well known NYC avant garde musicians and composers. In Daniel's class we learned about all the "musique concrete' people, and we actually learned how to make REAL TAPE LOOPS, yes with a reel-to-reel and real tape, razors etc. I know. Way to date yourself. So when I do electronica looping I often think of that stuff. But Subotnick, Reich, Feldman, Oliveros, Scott, Moog, Buchla, Cage, Varese, Stockhausen, Braxton, Glass, Penderecki and their ideas about sound all fill my head on a regular basis.

2018 finds Yes celebrating their 50th Anniversary as a band
Rhino has released a special boxed set of five vinyl albums remixed by Steven Wilson. The albums come housed in a box with a new Roger Dean painting on the outside. The albums are The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans and Relayer. The albums were previously released via Panegyric on CD/Blu-ray. 

Jon Kirkman plays tracks from the albums and also features exclusive audio commentary from the members of Yes and Roger Dean in this two-hour-plus feature.

It's still unreal to think I won't say "Happy Birthday" on this earth, for the second time, to Cheri. It's a difficult road...yet I have to realize so, so many have walked it and a million people TODAY are going down this road. It's the human journey I guess, massive loss. Just part of the program. One of our huge rituals was music so I am filling my day with music in her honour. Here's a piece that I know she'd love, she LOVED Shakti and Indian music and this is my humble REFERENCE to such music, it's not close but it's from the heart, and I actually use some of her percussion at the end. Her Tibetan/Himalayan tingsha bells at the end...are kind of her signature sound that I try to use on lots of stuff. At the end....they fades out and disappear, yet resonate forever....

Along with countless artists - I'm trying to dispense with the concept of what music used to mean in the "marketplace". It's the 21st century. I'll still work on CDs, release them once inna while and sell them at shows etc. But -- the same technology that artists complain is "wrecking their livelihood" also allows us to simply share the music with a few people who might want to check it out. Gonna attempt to do that more, from time to time. Life is short.
