My brother, Elliott, gave me a call the other day, and I found the conversation that followed to be relevant and informative to what this new musical project is all about.
If my memory serves me well (it usually doesn't), the conversation went as follows....roughly.
*ring* *ring*
Me-"Sup, bro?"
Elliott-"Sup, dude."
Me-"Oh, just hangin' out; taking a stroll with a pretty lady. What's up with you?"
Elliott-"Want me to call you back later? Or do you have a minute."
Me-"Nah, I've got a minute. What's up."
Elliott-"Dude, what's this music project thing?"
Me-"Lockheart Sindex?"
Elliott-"Yeah, the f**k is that?"
Me-"Haha, what do you mean? Like, what does it mean or..
Elliott-"Naaah dude, like f**kin what's it all about? I saw your post or whatever, "writing music from your feelings" or whatever..."
Me-"..yeah.."
Elliott-"...but, like, that doesn't tell me sh*t. What kind of f**kin music are you making, dude?"
Me-"Hah, I don't know, dude, it's hard to explain..."
Elliott-"..try.."
Me-"...I mean..okay,,well, it's way more mellow that what I've done in the past..like with South Street.."
Elliott-"..okay.."
Me-"...and it's pretty melodic..and it the whole piece flows pretty smoothly from one song to the next...
Elliott-"..uh huh.."
Me-"And it's got this over all feel to it. It's like.....say you wake up early in the morning, around 7, and it is a beautiful day. I mean like, sunny and 75 with a light warm breeze that is gently billowing the curtains of your open window. And as you open your eyes and take in the soft morning light, your mind and body streeeeetch to wake up. In this awakening you are hit with the rushing weight of reality and the responsibilities that come with; the worries; the regrets; the failures; the successes; the expectations...all of it..and instead of turning and going back to sleep, or making busy work to avoid it all, you sit and you let it all sink in. You accept the weight of life. You study it. You learn from it. You deal with it. You grow with it...and once you have taken the time to really wake up; mentally, physically, spiritually, you find yourself energized a prepared to rise like the sun, moving forward into the day....the songs are pretty mellow, but some have really big builds and orgasmic climaxes and what not.."
Elliott-"..."
Me-"...so yeah...I guess I want my music to be, like, playing in the back round of that little meditation...or maybe; my music is a result of what that meditation has lead me to discover in my life or something...I don't know..but, yeah."
Elliott-"Nice dude. Should'a' just said that sh*t in the first place."
Me-"Hahaha maybe I'll just type up this conversation and post it as my explanation."
Elliott-"You should, dude."
Me-"I'll get on it."
Elliott-"Word. Wait, what's the instrumentation?"
Me-"Uuuhh..uke, piano, drums, bass and some acoustic and electric guitar...and me singing."
Elliott-"Word, dude. Sounds preeetty sweeeet. Well I just got to my house so I am gonna go."
Me-"Word dude. Thanks for the prompt. I'll catch you later."

G. Love & Special Sauce is an American Hip-Hop Blues band known for its unique fusion of hip-hop, blues, funk, and soul. Formed in 1993 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the band originally featured Garrett Dutton, aka G. Love, as the lead vocalist and guitarist, Jeffrey Clemens on drums, and Jim Prescott on bass. The trio quickly gained attention for their laid-back, groovy style and G. Love’s unique vocal delivery, blending rap-like spoken word with bluesy singing.

Their debut self-titled album, G. Love & Special Sauce, was released in 1994 on Epic Records and included the hit single “Cold Beverage,” which became popular on alternative radio stations and MTV, solidifying their presence in the music scene. The band’s style has been described as a mix of “slacker blues” and “alternative hip-hop,” as they frequently incorporate elements of 90s hip-hop beats with classic blues rhythms.

Over the years, G. Love & Special Sauce has released numerous albums, including Coast to Coast Motel (1995), Yeah, It’s That Easy (1997), The Electric Mile (2001) and the GRAMMY nominated The Juice (2020). Their sound evolved to include more soul, R&B, and rock influences, though they retained their laid-back vibe and clever lyrical play. Their 2014 album Sugar saw a reunion of the original lineup after several years, and they continued to tour and produce music with a loyal fan base.

Known for their energetic live performances, G. Love & Special Sauce has played at festivals like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. Garrett Dutton also frequently collaborates with other artists, including Jack Johnson, with whom he shares a similar vibe, and has released solo projects that dive deeper into his blues influences. G. Love & Special Sauce remains a beloved name in the music scene, blending genres in a way that feels fresh and authentic.
