The City

Stefan Schwander aka Harmonious Thelonious is definitely not a newcomer. He has been around for a long time and has already released lots of amazingly varied music on labels such as Emotional Response, Italic, Meakusma and Diskant. He’s also an integral part of the infamous Duesseldorf / Salon Des Amateurs axis that is an obvious hotbed of talent. He describes his style as "American minimalism vs. African drumming vs. European sequencing", a heady mixture which is clearly evident on this EP though with a definite Middle Eastern twist. At Versatile HQ they were introduced to this clutch of tracks by one of the members of Acid Arab and were totally blown away. Stefan has a very unique production style, fusing all of the above elements with a hint of Gamelan, a dash of tweaked FM synthesis type sounds with a dose of warm ambience and finally his own singular touch on the mix. Here premiered is the b1 "Defender", our fave cut of this delightful four tracker. revisiting some of the A-side sound palette, but catapulting those cosmic tones into a realm of amphetamine fuelled intensity - peaktime drummy psychedelia for any and all dance floors. As the King Cobra uncoils from a woven basket and flares out its iconic hood, it appears to sway back and forth hypnotically as the snake charmer plays his flute. Timpani solos, a variety of percussion, syncopated rhythms and colorful harmonies are woven together to create an exotic tapestry of sound that will captivate young musicians and their audiences. Puma & The Dolphin releases their first EP and it is massive. Our pick up is a B1 track -  "Cobra Dance".
Taking a similar yet slightly different aproach to the post-punk sound of previous tracks, this tune features a catchy bassline and groovy percussion, alternating between vocal samples, melodic elements, and rhythmic phrases. @Spatial-Awareness follows up his previous warmly-received release "Reveal Yourself" with "Snakeoil", a hypnotically insistent dancefloor groove that blurs the edges of acid house and techno, and named as a wry aside to certain less-than-trustworthy players on the world stage.

With Spatial Awareness having remixed debut release "Telephobia" last year (on Pete Dorling's Interzone Music Club label), rising enigma @RosaKlebb kindly returns the favour, peppering "Snakeoil" with some exhilarating left-of-centre techno magic.
