Songs of Disquiet
are a journey into the unknown within ourselves. In these songs, an imaginary self
reflects on its own being – glimpses of what is real within us, condensed into a feeling,
a thought, a mood.
Those who observe themselves do not experience identity as fixed, but as fluid. And yet,
in daily life, we live within strong patterns that provide stability and shape our sense of
self.
This composition gives voice to that tension. It offers restless self-reflections – states of
soul, whose atmospheric colours, resonances, and inner rhythms are captured and
transformed into sound.

Songs of Disquiet

Viola ... Voilà!
is a composition for solo viola in two movements.
 
A Touch of Violet
The idea for this movement came while listening to a Fankani pattern from the Malinké
culture (Guinea/Mali) – a kind of rhythmic anthem once played to welcome honoured
guests. Its energy suggested a continuous motion, which became the basis for the entire
movement. – If music has a colour, this movement is a dance in violet.

Songlines
Once heard, I couldn’t forget the short theme from the first movement of Ligeti’s Viola
Sonata. From there, my Songlines set out – following a path of their own.“Songlines“ is
not a song in the conventional sense. It follows no traditional structure, but unfolds as a
continuous melos. Rooted in modal tone fields, this music moves freely – independent
of pulse and functional harmony. Not a closed melody, but a sung path that keeps
weaving onward.

Viola … Voilà!

Die »Bashō Lieder« sind eine klangliche Meditation für Akkordeon solo in fünf Sätzen. Jedem musikalischen Satz ist ein Haiku, ein dreizeiliges Kurzgedicht des japanischen Dichters Matsuo Bashō vorangestellt, dass dem betreffenden “Lied” Impuls, Richtung und Farbe gibt.
 
Ein Haiku hat die kürzeste aller lyrischen Formen, die in der Weltliteratur von Bedeutung sind. Sein Vers besteht aus drei Wortgruppen, deren Silben im Verhältnis von 5 – 7 – 5 stehen. Siebzehn gesprochene Silben seien das Maß eines Atemzugs, heißt es.  
 
Matsuo Bashō lebte von 1644 bis 1694 als Dichter und Zen-Mönch in Japan. Viele seiner Haiku schrieb er während langer und einsamer Wanderungen durch das Land. Es sind Verse über die Erfahrung des „hier und jetzt Seins in der Welt“. Seine Haiku sind konkret, beschreiben Natur und Jahreszeiten momentgenau, und suchen doch immer das Ganze. Im Aktuellen das Wesen der Dinge zu finden, ist ihr Sinn. So wird das Beschriebene zu einer Art Ur-Erlebnis. Eine fast zeitlose Sicht auf das Leben. Bewegung und Verharren. Spannung und Entspannung. Einatmen und Ausatmen. Grundstoff, auch in der Musik.
