This is an amalgam of two mixes I did for Solid Steel at the end of November, 2013. Both were 30 minutes and with a similar downbeat, electronic nature. It's the sort of thing I like to listen to late at night when I'm working on designs or writing. Both appeared on separate shows but were done around the same time so I wanted to present them in one piece like this.

A Little Night Music...

2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's.

Your favourite Coldcut mix was the 'Journeys by DJ Special' from 20th May 2002. The original '70 minutes of Madness' was released in 1995 and often considered "the best DJ mix album of all time" and this mix coincided with it's reissue in 2002. It features extra tracks that didn't appear on the original CD including the Coldcut rework of 'People hold on'

Unsurprisingly, the most popular mix for DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot and DJ Food was their epic version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album from 31st August 2012 made entirely from the original sample sources titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ . Each of them took a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

Finally it was the Hexstatic mix from 28th January 2011 which was your favourite, with the classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. SBTRKT's remix of Modeselektors 'Art&Cash' leads perfectly into material from Robin Hexstatic's project, plus music from  Magnetic Man, Andreya Triana and Dave Angel.

Congratulations to Daniel Westlake from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, who was the winner picked at random in the competition and will receive prizes from Novation, AIAIA, Serato and Solid Steel.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (8th May) This week we welcome Rob Booth for a special Houndstooth label mix and it's a return for Luke Vibert on Solid Steel with a crazy mash-up mix. You can also listen to his archive mixes from 2003 and 2007 on the new Solid Steel website, plus his mix as Wagon Christ from 2001. http://www.solidsteel.net/

In Hour 2 it's Luke Vibert, a man of many monikers including Wagon Christ, Plug, Amen Andrews and Kerrier District, under which he recently released an album entitled 4 on Hypercolour. This is the first Kerrier District album in over 10 years since the Rephlex release back in 2004. Luke has been a guest at Solid Steel club nights over the years and this is his 5th mix, his music has been a firm fixture on the show for over 20 years. He's even turned out a version of the Solid Steel intro especially for us and not for the first time either. And so on to his mix for this week, with artist titles such as Ragga Houston, Drexipan and AFX Jackson, you know as always with Luke Vibert, you're in for something unexpected. When asked to sum up his mix, he simply said;
"It's sum of my stupid mash-ups put together!"

Back in 2010, Gilles Peterson recorded a special Brownswood Basement show focusing on the evolution of drum & bass through the 90s and into the 00s. It was by no means a comprehensive history of the genre, but it did represent an excellent snapshot of the tunes that struck a chord with Gilles back then. 100% vinyl (and acetates), Gilles spent the best part of a day rummaging through hundreds of records and picked out around 40 of his favourite tracks from the likes of Alex Reece, Peshay, Goldie, Drumagick, Roni Size and Photek… then @alex-patchwork got deep in the mix. Here then, is the first hour-long mix that made up that show - no links, jingles or drops - just the music. We hope you enjoy it.

D&B Special Part 1 (2010)

The Mushroom Jazz series is well known among lovers of downtempo beats as the signature sound of Mark Farina, but simultaneous to the creation of that famous project was his Downtempo Forest series of mixtapes. This is number 6 from 1996 featuring KRS-One, Fat Joe, Common, Mad Skillz, and some seriously funky acid jazz wafting through the mix. One to chill on. Enjoy!

  Gilles Peterson who will be spinning his signature set of latin infused acid jazz at iLL Communications. As a well recognized musical tastemaker, he spreads his influence on music listeners through WorldWide radio show celebrating 10 years on BBC Radio 1 now broadcasted in 15 countries from New Zealand, Croatia, Nigeria, USA to Cyprus. Gilles Peterson is a DJ, record collector and a three record label owner (Acid Jazz, Talkin’ Loud and Brownswood) from London, UK. Brought up among the South London suburban soul scene in the early eighties, Gilles would listen to Level 42, Earth Wind & Fire, Central Line and the heavier, deeper pirate stations such as Radio Invicta. This inspired him to set up his own station - an aerial suspended between a tree and a phone box - playing an eclectic mix of jazz, funk, reggae, soul and early electro. Over the years Gilles had collected so many records he had to move to a bigger house to fit all his records. He has come along way since then by being associated with the careers of countless well-known artists such as Erykah Badu, Tony Rich, Jamiroquai and from United Future Organization. 
  
  He has also hosted his Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards every year, the awards are an annual celebration of all the best new music that has come through every year on Gilles' Radio 1 show, with some of the best new acts performing on the night. He continues to be a breath of fresh air on the dance floors of the world and on this special night he will be playing unique selection of music that is rarely heard elsewhere.

To coincide with the launch of the documentary celebrating the history of the legendary Mo' Wax Records, we asked one of our favourite Montreal DJs, Phil Larochelle, to dive into the back catalogue and record a session consisting of his all-time favourites. 

The imprint founded in 1992 by James Lavelle was home to the some of the forward-thinking genre-defying beats. From DJ Krush to DJ Shadow, Motorbass to Unkle, the label was a melting-pot of Jazz, Hip Hop, Breaks, Trip Hop, Electronica and whatever else artists felt like putting on a slice of wax.
